Have only one carcass in chest freezer, but can work to save more from myself and others.

Do you have a timeframe that you need them by?
Just want to accumulate enough to make it worth the time to drop off.  :)

Thank you for your willingness to help out, Harold!  Unfortunately, the carcasses can't be frozen because it messes the eggs up for processing (males would be okay to freeze though).  That said, if you could just put filleted fish in the refrigerator or on ice and give me a call (831-515-8232), I can swing by wherever is convenient and pick it up.  Jim says if you take him diving with you, he'll deliver them as well.   :smt002

As for a timeframe...I'll be collecting through August, but need to preserve gonads (specifically, eggs) within about 6-8 hours of capture.

Any way of telling sex from the outside?

I'll keep the no-freezing in mind and hopefully be able to contribute.   :smt001

Unfortunately, since California Halibut are broadcast spawners, there is no way to externally sex them.  If they are reproductive, you may be able to apply a bit of pressure to the abdomen and check for extruded sperm (white) or eggs (orange).  Otherwise, you've got to cut them up to find out.

Hi All,

I had a pretty successful weekend with one female halibut caught out of Santa Cruz Harbor on Saturday and one female and two males coming into the Capitola Wharf on Sunday.  After processing these fish, I realized that being a bit more conservative when filleting is essential.  Unfortunately, this means leaving a bit more meat on the carcass than I'm sure you'd like, but it makes a drastic difference with processing and analyses to have gonads completely intact.  I've updated my informational flyer (link below) to illustrate the area of concern when cutting into the fish.  I hope this doesn't prevent some of you from donating carcasses...and again all of your help is greatly appreciated!

On another note, if any of you happen to have ideas on how to catch shakers, I'd love to hear about it!  Better yet, if you think you might be successful in capturing some sublegal fish, let's talk.  I have a scientific collecting permit to collect a pre-determined number of the smaller ones for my study.  If you're willing to bring me out with you (I have to be there to make it legal), it could really help.   :smt003

Thank you again for all of your support!  I hope to gather some really good information for the fishery.

Cheryl

Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Hey...I need shorts too (to find out when they initially start to reproduce).  I've gotta be present with my scientific collecting permit, but if you know where to find them and don't mind bringing me along...I'd love to take them off your hands!   :smt003

You need to shoot Dan Campos (DC on here) a PM and see what his favorite beverage is and be at the dock waiting with a six pack of it when ever he comes back in.
