Bleh.  I see those signs up there every now and again.

I personally take it with a grain of salt and if I could dive this weekend I'd be hitting Carmel up for sure, and would just rinse my catch as usual in fresh water when I got home and eat it up!  :smt004

The water still looks better than some other places I have dove!  :smt003

Just my 2 cents.

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

It's just the water near the beach.  The contamination likely comes in from that little drain next to the stairs.  It's probably always the same concentration in the drain, unless it's raining.  Anyway, the beach water concentrations shoot up when the inside swell lays down and depending when and where they sample.  The same thing happens in Santa Cruz Co during the summer at Cowells, Main Beach, Mitchells and New Brighton.  Basically, the near-shore water is semi-stagnant and the levels go up.  When the swell picks up, it gets mix-mastered and diluted and the levels go down.  The water outside will likely be fine.

There's a large stormwater runoff pipe right next to the ramp.  Plus the liveaboards......I don't know if there's a pumpout station or a mobile unit that pumps for pay but I've never seen one and alot of those boats don't move.

Why isn't the MLPA all over this? They blame fishermen for killing too much of their fish but will let Stillwater Cove dirty the water  :smt011

There is a pump out at the fuel dock, but your right, many of those boats dont move much, if at all.

The inner harbor can be filthy at times.

They have been cracking down with inspections and such of late.

My guess (just a guess) is that they are getting ready for the salmon rearing pens that are siting at the ramp now.
