Most may not care, and that doesn't bother me, because I care, and it feels great to share my victory with the world.

11 months ago I was laid off from my job of 11 years, the position was moved to southern california. Having a home and a family, just packing up and leaving in two weeks notice wasn't an option, nor did I ever want to live in SoCal again, we have such a great spot her in Santa Cruz. It came as a real shock and scared this crap out of me.

When your employed for so long, it can be hard to realize how bad the job market really is. Being suddenly forced into it, you quickly realize its pretty serious. It's not that there isn't jobs, there is, but every position is flooded with qualified and over qualified applicants. Hundreds of them.

In my 11 months of being unemployed, I have searched day and night for a job and sent countless resumes out. It can be very defeating to be in this position and very scary. When you have a child to feed and house, shits gets serious quickly! Many days on the job search showed no jobs in my field, but I still applied anywhere I could. Many times you will just get a automated response, telling you they are flooded with applicants, and then never hear anything more, very frustrating. Nobody wants to talk to you or have you apply in person, just send your resume in a email and wait and wait and wait. The stress continues to build, but it's all in how you choose to manage that stress thats important. With some serious effort and positive thinking skills, one can power through it to some degree. I managed to not let my heavy stress turn to depression, which is very important, but it takes constant work and serious effort.

2 weeks ago, I finally got a call and managed to get the very first interview in a pool of over 150 applicants. I interviewed, toured the facility and then played the waiting game as they interviewed for the next 2 weeks...

I finally received a return phone call and I got the f@cking job! I beat out all the other candidates with my willingness to learn a new skill, grow with the company, and use my existing skills. I didn't go in demanding this and that, I went in with a good attitude, letting them know what I can do for them. I am getting paid less for now, but I will go in, work hard and show them what I can do and work my way up while learning some great new skills, theres plenty of room to grow with the company. I could have held out for more in another job, but that may have never happened, but Im feeling pretty good about this opportunity and more importantly I will be working again and feeling good about doing my part for my family! My first and only interview in 11 months and I got the job, that feels good!

With some hard work I think things will work out for the best, to be honest I was bored stiff with my last job because I had done it for so long, the content was great, but the challenge was gone. A new challenge awaits. I had almost no savings when I got laid. I received a nice severance package, which I have managed to save, and now have a nice little savings and a new job!

Unemployment sucks and collecting benefits hurts your ego, but I'd like to thank our government for having such a wonderful offering, with out it we would be homeless by now. I love the USA! And I know a lot don't like Obama, but I'd like to thank him for extending unemployment, it saved my ass. During my time off I also re-enrolled in school, and will continue to do so.

So hear I am, The Search is Over! I made it out the other side with some hard work and lots of hope! To anyone else in this shitty situation, keep your head up and stay positive! I feel for you! One thing I have had a chance to do is be a full time dad to my 3 year old the last year and that alone is priceless, not many dads get to do that. Ill miss her horribly going back to work, but the time spent has been amazing, give those full time moms some respect, being a full time parent is a serious challenge, but very rewarding.

The search is over, now if I can just get a halibut from my kayak and end that search too!

Thanks to all that have supported me, checked in on me regularly and dived and fished with me, it was a tremendous help in staying focused.

thanks.. also learned its not a bad idea to always be looking at current job offerings, something I never did. Being forced back into it after all these years is tough. Kkep that resume current. You never know.

Glad that you landed a job in this still tight market.  I was laid-off about 3 years ago and it took me almost one and a half year to land the current job.  I had to withdraw money from my 401k and paid a hefty fine for early withdrawal but if what it takes to stay afloat during bad time then I'm OK with it.  Thank you for sharing your story and I wish you the best in your new "adventure".   :smt001

well, kinda, sorta, not really :)

I got high blood sugar, changed everything I ate and drank to super low carb, drink nothing but water and so on... light exercise and lots diving, lost 41 pounds. :)
