I can still remember/taste the day before GS4 tourney when Bird was cleaning his salmon and I got to taste a piece of it. Sashimi doesn't get any fresher than that! This year, I'm bringing packets of soy sauce and wasabi and stalk Bird!!

This movie you should watch, Padowan.   :smt003

Tad - I run a dodger/flasher when I use the DeepSix because I'm in troll mode only.  The banana weight and mooching rig is a cheaper setup that I can get down into the rocks more and not have as much risk of losing $25 worth of gear in the DeepSix and dodger.

For GS I'll likely be all bait.

Thanks Bro, thats what I thought :smt002
I'm going with 2 rods set up,
1 trolling mode: diving device-Slingblade dodger- barbless slip rig- chovies/herring
1 mooching mode: banana weight- slip rig- bait or lead head jig-swim bait.
That should cover it :smt001

Im not sure if it changed, but if you are mooching south of Horse mountain your hooks have to be circle hooks and they can't be more than 5 inches apart.  The game warden was enforcing this last year.

So the next question is; does anyone make a barbless circle hook slip rig or non slip that is 5 in. or less?
And where can I (we) get them? Englunds Marine maybe? online?

True that you need to mooch with fixed barbless circle hooks for salmon south of Horse Mtn.  My solution is to just keep trolling, and when I do stop to sit there (rare) I put down fixed circles that Lost Coast Tackle tied up for me.  Maybe Lost Coast Tackle (Domenic) will have that product available...

So to be legal trolling and mooching bait: Fixed, barbless, circle, no longer than 5 in. apart :smt002

next question: I have a couple Apex trolling lures with pinched/filed barbs,
do I need to swap the stock hooks to barbless circle?
Regulation overload :smt013

The guy at Tackle and Ammo in Vacaville told me that pinching the barb down was enough to be compliant.  I would think he would know?

not always, some wardens carry lambs wool, and if the pushed down barb catches wool, your toast, better safe than sorry, go with true barbless hooks, cameron

You dont have to have circle hooks when trolling.  Its only a mooching rig that requires circle hooks and this is only for south of Horse mountain.  You can use plain octopus hooks for mooching North of Horse mountain.

It's starting to get confusing!   :smt005  "Mooching rigs" are legal for trolling, but mooching must be done with fixed cirle hooks.  So what I recommend is buying the "mooching slip rig" and troll with it.  When you stop and aren't under any propulsion and put bait out, that's mooching, and that's the ONLY time you would need the fixed circle hooks.

Now, you can also troll with the fixed circle hooks which would make you legal to stop trolling and mooch that rig, but the slip rig is way better for trolling, and trolling produces more salmon, and I love trolling.   :smt003  The key, remember, is to keep moving if you have a slip rig out.
