Al whats heavy? I have had pretty good success on the ML with up to 5oz. (maybe 6oz) Any more that that and I am wondering if the conditions = get off the water. I tend to use the ML for 3-5oz

Sorry forgot to mention that this would not be for kayak fishing. I would be fishing on a small boat 90% of the time.

ML is all you need......How much do you actually think you can pull in a yak?

It's not just how hard you can pull on a fish.  It's how the rod feels when working your lure,  but you know that!

I've never found that ling cod and California butts work too well on the same stick. One needs power/backbone the other needs soft tip/medium flex.

You can catch both, but you will either miss some of those light/deep halibut bites or you will bust off some of the bigger lings.

There's no way I'm going ling fishing with 15-20  lb test. like for halibut.

Get two sticks. One for the rocky areas and one for the sand bottom/open water areas. Rockfish/ling cod. Halibut/salmon/stripers.

My two cents anyway...

Lots of good advice here ... almost.
It spears that with everyone wanting to give you their two cents they forgot to add a key piece of info ......
There is three lines of the Travala rod.
Travala
Travala-F
Travala-S
A med will feel different in each  line. So in order to answer your question we would have to know which line you are looking at. To answer your question without addressing the above would just be a guess at best.
FWIW
I have been very competitive with the Med Travala-S model TVSC63M with a line rating of 40-60. This rod has plenty of power for large rockfish (as shown at TRW)  but also a soft enough action for Salmon (as demonstrated at PIF)
Hope this is helpful.

See ya soon,
Eric / Yakhopper

A tiger ugly stick works as good.  I caught my 45lb pacific halibit on an ugly stick with abu garcia 7000 with 30lbthe braid.  My abet with the my trevalia didn't get a scratch.  The ugly stick works great for salmon,  tuna, lingcod, and rockfish too.

I'm not sure if the rod and reel can be blamed for that ;)

On another note, if anyone is wanting brand new Trevala rods, I have three that I am willing to sell. Two TVC-66MH (50-100 braid) and one TVC-66M (30-80 braid). Still with the tags, just want to go with something else. $90 cash each?

I live in socal, but drive to the East Bay area since my folks live in the area. Message me if anyone is interested and maybe we could meet up the next time I come in town. Sorry for the derail :)

I use 2-3.5 on the ML, 3-5 on the MH, but 6+ on the H. Depends on the conditions which rod I bring out  :smt003

I use the TVC-66M for lings/rockies using 2-6oz lures and the TVC-70L for light rockfish & halibut using 1-4oz lures. From a boat, you might want to consider the MH or H models because the Trevala line in general is pretty dang flimsy (it's like humpin w/2 condoms on) and you're probably going to want a rod that allows more weight when necessary. The 66M is a great all-around rod. But I prefer to go light w/the 70L whenever possible. It's money for 1.5-3oz irons.
