Which Trevala should I get the MH or M model? It would mainly be for Rockcod/Lingcod/halibut. Would the MH be overkill for rockcods? Would it still be fun to fish? Any comments or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I've got the medium and love it.  That said, I do believe that some use the MH also.  You should get plenty of responses as that model is a favorite around here.

Thanks Dilbeck. Whats the biggest fish you caught on the M? Is it fun catching Rockcods or a bit overkill? If you could choose now would you stay with the M or choose ML or MH?

Also whats the heaviest jig that you could use for the M? It says 200g so that's 7ounces but have you tried 8 ounces? Thanks again guys.

All 3 rods, the ML, M, & MH, are well represented here by someone or another.  I'd say it boils down to personal preference though.  Do you like a limber rod, a little backbone, or something a little stiffer.

I had both the M & MH in my hand for comparison and when they finally went on sale, only the M was in stock so that was what I went with and don't have any complaints.  That said, I've only had mine for a season and a handful of trips and haven't landed anything gigantic, maybe a 6-7 lb. ling.  It was definitely fun, perfect amount of action for me.  Not too stiff so you can feel the fight and definitely not a noodle as some backbone is nice if you need to horse them up.

I've only used 3-4 oz jigs but wouldn't hesitate going up to 6 oz.

Hope this helps but take it for what it's worth because, as most know, I'm not a salty vet like most.

Let me know if you need a reel to pair with that new Trevala.  :smt003    I have a brand new Abu Garcia Toro 50 HS I'd like to unload.

I had a Mh (and will again) but it is overkill for the fish around d here, with the exception of sturgeon and WSB.
I now am running a ML for everything but sturgeon- and even there I am thinking it would work from the yak. The M would be a nice balance I'd think.

Agreed. I picked up the MH and still use it when I'm in NorCal, but where it really shined was fishing for yellowtail with yo-yo jigs in SoCal and sturgeon fishing. I think If I were to pick up a single "all around" rod for fishing NorCal it would be the M Trevala. If I wanted a rod for fishing just rockfish, ling cod and halibut it would be the ML Trevala.

I'd say buy one of each model. This way you can switch rod for different weight when needed. I've landed a sturgeon on the medium rod and it handled the fish just fine.

Thanks guys, I think I'll get the M. Hope it can handle 7 oz jigs when the water does get choppy.

ML is all you need......How much do you actually think you can pull in a yak? There is a limited amount of "pull" before you end up pulling yourself TO the fish. I bagged a 49 lbs WSB with a ML (Oh and I got a 2nd on on a bass rod, so you really don't need much hardware as long as you a patient and don't horse it in)

basically the same thing with my 58# Rooster- on a MH w/ Avet SX (did take me 2 hours)

I've got almost every TVC they make except the heaviest ones.  The TVC-66 MH is IMHO the BEST all around rod i've used for saltwater, period.  The ML is too light to jig heavy irons to me, but is still one of my favorites for fishing light irons and shrimp flies.  What I would really like to see is a 7' MH.

Sorry I made a mistake, I actually caught that sturgeon on my avatar with the medium light rod.  I agree with Al on the rod selection. The MH would be my rod of choice for the all around application.
