WTF, that is just wrong, pardon a turkey but slaughter hundreds of thousands of horses. Let the lawsuits begin  :smt011
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

Very strange. Is there even a market? It seems those states think so but I've never heard of anyone eating horses in the states.

The article on MSNBC said the sake of horsemeat was banned in CA.
I don't really see a problem with eating horse, meat is meat and something will have to die to provide it.

I don't really get the controversy. One of the comments said they wouldn't eat horse because they "admire and respect" the animal.  I personally admire and respect Elk, deer, pig, and any animal...but I'll still try them as food if they are prepared properly. Heck, I especially admire and respect WSB and halibut!

In the mid 1940's my dad bought a surplus bomber jacket that he wore during his senior year in high school. Later he gave it to my brother, who wore it rambling up & down the west coast & on his motorcycle. In 1983 I got it from him, and wore it in high school until I outgrew it. The lining was tattered but the leather, still solid and wearable. My dad has it in his closet today as a memento. The leather it is made from? front quarter horsehide.

Answered my own question.

"But pro-slaughter activists say the ban had unintended consequences, including an increase in neglect and the abandonment of horses, and that they are scrambling to get a plant going -- possibly in Wyoming, North Dakota, Nebraska or Missouri. They estimate a slaughterhouse could open in 30 to 90 days with state approval and eventually as many as 200,000 horses a year could be slaughtered for human consumption. Most of the meat would be shipped to countries in Europe and Asia, including France and Japan."

Our economy takes a beating because we can't produce anything cheap enough to compete with third world factories.......we finally have a product to export and everyone is up in arms  :smt002

Sean hit the nail on the head.  Like most other animals, horses are made of meat....meat = food.
Eric B.......you made me laugh sir, well done.

Horse meat is actually very good. I liken it to moose meat.  Very lean, very dark. People all over the world eat horse meat, not as much in the US, but Canada it is on the shelf. One way to look at this, is since the downfall of the economy, horses are being dropped off and left, all over the country. Take a comodity like that, turn it into a saleable product, and all of a sudden, the horse market is right back to where it should be, and abandoned horses wiill be used for food, glue, and leather. The wanted horses will be fine, it is the ones that are abandoned, that will be processed first. As a meat source, they grow fast, and reach muscular maturity around 3 years of age. This is slightly longer than cattle, but the yield of meat is half again as much as a steer, with comparable feed requirements. I thought it was stupid when they banned it, what do you do with your aging horse? Wait for it to die, then have it hauled to the rendering plant? I can tell you it is a lot easier to move a horse while it is still alive!

I'll try it for sure. Always love eating "new" stuff.

Meat is meat IMO.

Sincerely,

Jim
