That article is exploiting the dangers and perpetuating the myth of the old dirty miner. Elko, winnemucca, and all along hwy80, are the mine operations. Most of it is open pit, there is a lot of underground too. The exact same process as like the Devil's slide project, Caldecott, or New Irvington tunnels. Most of the jobs are just like dirt work construction, operating equipment etc. Oh, overseas, mostly that is for degreed professionals. The good thing about mining jobs, if you cannot grow it, you have to mine it. That includes aggregates for concrete, asphalt, and crushed stone. Every Metro area in the world has a quarry around. Take that skill and experience and you can move anywhere in the country and find work. Just tryin to help.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

26 mining deaths in the last 10 years in Nevada alone. That doesn't include injuries. Sounds like a deal to me............. :smt012

If I had to choose between opilio crab fishing and mining...I dunno where I'd go.

If I was 25, I'd be interested in adventure...20 years later, these days I tend to calculate recuperation time from a potential injury before committing  :smt044

I personally know, that the mines in Nevada are hiring laborers, mechanics, operators, miners, electricians, etc. And, paying signing bonuses! If I was out of work, had a family and couldnt find anything in a month, I would be in Northern Nevada tomorrow! Any job type, they have. Wont be 200K, but 80 plus is not unheard of for entry level. Same with drilling for oil and gas in North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. So I have NO PITY, for people that cry they cant find a job! I have contacts, and numbers, PM me and make a life change for the better!

Well after reading and looking into this mining a bit, I cant help but feel interested in it if there paying that much! I know theres a lot to possibly lose if you were to go this route, but for a young guy like myself(25), who has been suffering from a bad economy and no avail. work(construction/painter), it only makes since for me to look into it. For ya that know me well, you would know that I may not be the smartest or the brightest being out there, but I'm a hell of a hardworker and get shit done. I've been working in trades all my life, with a lil bit of restuarant on the side, but after all these years Im still struggling to figure out where i want to be and what i want to do with the rest of life. I enjoy to paint, i really do, and I'm pretty good at it, but w/o a business license and with soo much competition out there for work, its hard right now. I really enjoy to fish too, and have thought of being a professional Guide, but without any money, or money to spend, its hard to make money. I live with my Gf Christina and we have a home together but no kids yet, thank god! I Love Her and all that we share and have together, but really seeing what I have and dont have, I sometimes feel making a big move to go down to Socal,or even now, Nevada or out of state to land a good paying job is a real possiblity if I wanted. I'm just tired of being on the back burner and want to start at least thinkin I'm workin towards makin a good life. In all honestly, $80,000 would be good $$ to me. If you were me in my shoes, what would you do????......Rich, so whos your contacts in Nevada?

I wish you the best of luck buddy!

I don't know crap about mining or Nevada, but hope you and Christina can wind up in a place where you are both happy and able to make enough money to do what you want to do with your life.

Sincerely,

Jim

I agree with Jim. My friend lives in Nevada with his wife and two kids, they love it. Tahoe is close, fishing, snowboarding, mountain biking, dirt biking... go for it, your young, you can always come back.

Ricci if you are serious about it I will hook you up. Mining is a great career, treated me and all of my family well. My point was, sometimes, when work dries up, you have to tram to where the work is. And the mining jobs are all kinds. From office staff, engineers, etc. Yeah, lots of people are killed, but look at construction. Working for Cal/OSHA, I have the numbers folks!
