I had a lottery number of 5 after Nixon reinstated the draft.   I enlisted in the USMC 71-73.  Basic was at Camp Pendelton, CA.  My duty station was Kaneohe, HI.  My  job was a court reporter.  They found out I was a swimmer and I became a drown proofing instructor.  That's the job I relished.

NCKA is full of selfless individuals, but I had no idea of the magnitude of service we have put in collectively for our country.  It is a privileged to be included in a group like this.

USN reserve; During my senior year of HS, one weekend per month I was a weekend warrior, the Submarine Pompanito was our training boat. That summer I did two weeks of Submarine School at Hunters Point, Naval Ship Yard, which also included sort of a low key 'boot camp'. I went active later that same year in  Nov of 1961, two fun and rather interesting years later, I mustered out as a 3rd class engineman in Nov 1963. I had been stationed in San Diego aboard the Sub Menhaden SS377. We were deployed and under water for three months off the coast of the Soviet Union. While on station there our screws snagged and ripped the net off a Russian trawler, So we made port in Adack Alaska to cut it off. That is one cold place, damn cold! Liberty ports during my tenure included Vancover BC, Pearl Harbor and Santa Barbara.

Nijmegan once in 1991,  I marched with  the Dutch Artillery Unit I supported back then.  For us it was a compititon event.  The Dutch took great pride in their march  On the The First Day we finished 4th, second day 1st, 3rd day 5th, Last day 9th.  Overall we did very well, but we lost a few memebers and it pushed down score wise.  Fun times!
