Someone on coastside says yes. I have doubts. Lateral line not completely visible from head to tail. No fork in tail. Rounded anal fins are all all non canary description items. BSteves? Not my fish.

Canary....lateral line, lack of deep red mottling north of the lat line, overall color more of a yellowish orange than a redish orange.

Close though, woulda been a chin checker for sure.

A couple of others thought it to be a rosiethorn rockfish and 1 fella thinks copper. Which I totally dont think it is. Its wierd because even if you look at the DFG ID chart and descrpitions the tail is way off. Not having a fork but a rounded end to it. Adam Koons................ can you run this by your guys? Thanks, Craig

1 fella thinks copper. Which I totally dont think it is.

Funny, cause if not canary, copper was my first guess.   :smt005

Assuming it's a hybrid of some sort?  I'm stumped...

My first thought was (if a single species)...a copper.
Mainly due to the rounded tail fin.  The pectoral fins are also a bit fleshier looking than on a canary.
Color is off, but coppers have such a wide variation of coloration... it's remotely feasible.

Difficult because even an individual fish can change color/patterns dramatically
A molted vermillion with dark patches on bottom... can be red/white on surface... then 5minutes later, uniform red.

Interesting fish, would love to find out verdict!   :smt001

On a related note, this canary pic appears to have rounded tail fin?

The primary give away for me aside from the caudal fin is the white along the lateral line.

On a canary the white tends to be thinner and extend or blend in to the white splotchy bars on the shoulder.

On a copper the white along the lateral line is thicker and terminates definitively in the dark pattern of the fish about 2/3 from the insertion of the caudal fin.

Of course as Harold mentions color and pattern change so much depending on circumstances.

edit: Anal fin leads to copper also.

What Agarcia said...
A canary will have a smooth gill plate while a vermillion has a rough one.  Im not sure about a copper's gill plate, but that is a good way to tell the difference when the color/pattern isn't convincing enough.

If thast a rosy its a freakin world record, looks twice the size of every rosy I've ever seen  :smt001

I still say its an atypical canary.  Whats the verdict on the dorsal fins, how much variation there cause this one definitely looks more in line with the canary than the copper.

I really do think that the blotchy areas are copper like. Its just the color thats throwing me off there. Never caught one up here in those colorings.  Now another possibility has been introduced on the coastside thread....................... juvenile yelloweye.??????
