The pattern suggests copper.  The body shape suggest copper.  The color suggest canary.  I think it's a hybrid.

I vote for not a canary according to this: http://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=36116.

1) No thick, clear gray-white band extending from head to tail
2) Rounded tail fin
3) Rounded anal fin

It looks like a copper, but I would definitely check the chin.

I think a vermillion had it's way with a copper and now you got a vercopper.  :smt002

Although I have never seen a copper rockfish in this coloration I am saying copper now just due to the fact that all the ID pieces fit. Especially the mottled area on the shoulders and the white underside. The latreal line is also not highly visible all the way to the gills through the shoulder area. I really would like to hear from a DFG guy on this one. There would be a mess for you huh?

Hi Guys & Ravensback-
I'm fairly sure it is a very light colored copper rockfish.  Why do I think so?  The blotches are in the right spots, the stout body shape, broad face, and the dorsal spines are more robust than a canary.  When you stare at enough fish, their faces start looking different from each other, what can I say....
Very cool color variant you were able to catch.  There's lot of differences of color within a species.  It's like the 'white whale' of the coppers you have there.  But its probably good you threw it back, I'm not DFG, and its better safe than sorry.

Yup, its a copper, I had the similar problem before..usually when I'm in doubt I throw it back..better safe than saying "I thought it was"...good thing they put it back when it get caught again they know what it is, I like LapuLapu's idea and Kayote..Its a hybrid same problems with Spoted and Smallmouth that share the same body of water...

I asked two DFG guys I know and they both said Copper as well.

Hey Jim,

That appears to be a copper in 'red form'.  Canary's will have a clear lateral line all the way to their 'head', and also have a darkish area on their 1st/spinous dorsal fin.  Coppers have 1/3 of their lateral line clear, starting at the tail going towards the head.  A good technique to ID canary's is to rub their lower 'chin' from back to front, if it is smooth it is a canary, if rough it is a vermillion or something else.  Hope that helps.

Happy fishing!
