Yeah Sledge, thurs arrival is a real good Idea. You can start soaking your pots anytime. Just can't pull the crabs out til saturday a.m.

Just an FYI for those who are planning to soak traps before the opener. I called the DFG field office in Monterey and they said that people who are dropping pots for dungeness before the season officially opens will be playing against the rules. If they hold out with the "but i was trying for rock crabs" in an area where there are no rocks they run the risk of being ticketed or if the DFG goes by a trap and pulls the trap and it does have dungeness the crab and gear can be confiscated at the time of their discovery because the dungeness crab was trapped before the season opens.

Just paddle out when there is light before the opener and mark some good areas on the gps, then go out really early on Saturday and drop the traps even in the dark. You'll be all set without having to worry about being hassled.

Enjoy!

If I put a trap out before dark friday, and get popped for a ticket, and I did not touch it before Sat morning, I would take that to the supreme court. But I see what they are wanting to discourage, it is just not in the regulations.

they are totally trying to discourage early dropping of pots and if they had not told me when i called i would drop earlier myself. because of this i am going to wait a week later to go crabbing due to my work schedule and the day of the opener.

i wish you all luck though, its been good for a couple of years so hopefully it is good once again.

when i go to beaches i see a lot of dungeness crab parts all over so they are there, just a matter of getting the legal ones.

If you still want chicken as bait. Most asain market sells the whole chicken carcass for about a buck each.  I normally take 2 and stuff it in the bait box. Seems to work for me.

the best is salmon heads which i brought back from WA and BB has them in San Jose :smt009  this yr at GS5 put it to the test with all kinds of different baits...hands down salmon heads took the billing...I don't have access to mackerel or an asian market i'm in gurniville so chicken will have to do...Polepole said the huge smelt i was catching with PP 3 weeks ago works well as crab bait also...but didn't save any... :smt009

I keep typing away here I've got to hit the road...#89...if it's available...if not what ever # site I can get I'm there...cYa all OTW soon!!!

If I get out  :smt009 I'll be trying 10 trout carcasses and some squid for good measure.  Trout worked for me last year just fine, but I still tossed in the squid, so not sure it was the trout  :smt044
