Should have a float.  It's usually a needle to the needle seat that allows it to continually leak.  Sometimes it's an old float that doesn't float anymore.  Had that happen.  Talk about tricky to find & an "duh" moment when I did find it.

I need you boys to come over here and motivate me to get working on my bike.... Not as challenging as your 'restore' project; just need to stop my #1 carb from dumping fuel.....

and maybe help me tune my Trail 70 :smt003

One or more of your float valves has stuck open, or else you have a speck of dirt on one of the valve seats.

I would try giving the float bowls a  light firm tap with a mallet,do it while running to if you can...rev it tap idle tap..repeat. Also, attach a hose to the drain spigot on the bottom, and open the drain screw. Let them run for a few minutes, this may flush the problem out.
If you succeed, try adding some carb cleaner to the fuel.

If all else fails the carbs have to come off for cleaning half hour job to get them off and you can leave the cables hooked up until free and to the side

Tried it; have taken them off, cleaned them, tested floats..... benched test for leaks (nada) when tested on the bike.... Niagra Falls..... :smt009

Before/after carb bowl.  55 min in ultrasonic cleaner at 50 deg C with 10:1 water/simple green lemon all-purpose.  No wipe down.  Is as it came out!

Kevin,

Here's what the wheel lacing looks like.

Bill

Bill,

I download the pic and blew it up as big as I could so I could count spokes.  It looks to be a cross 4 pattern.  If you ruler go along and measure a few of the spokes on both sides to ensure they are equal length.  take one cluster and measure really carefully.  there will be a 1mm-3mm variation due to truing (approx)  not much more than that.  This caused by tightening the spokes to get the wheel trued, some spokes are tighter than others, no big deal.  I am guessing, and again I did this off a pic, they are the same length which is pretty common on a cross 4 pattern. Should they turn out to be all different lengths, take it to a shop that deals with older bikes, because what ever you save in doing it your self will be wasted on the cases of beer you will spend on trying to get them in the right order.

Damn, Squidder, Can I refer to you for help next time I am in a bind???   I do all my work on my bikes and have learned from trial and error and from a motorcycle racing mechanic. By no means do I consider myself a mechanic. I just enjoy the  satisfaction of having the peace of mind that I fixed the problem. Thanks to guys like you who have shared their expertise to help others accomplish their repairs. :smt006 :smt006 :smt006

Thanks Sasquatch!

Were money no object I would have a nice sop in the back yard with double lifts and have you guys come over.  But alas it is an issue, I have no back yard, and it is hard to bring a bike up to the second floor apartment.  When I did the mock of the project bike I had to make sure the coffee table could handle the 600lbs of weight, and hope I wouldn't come home from work one day and find a hole in the floor where it fell through to the neighbor below.

I can also say dragging a compressor up and down the stairs sucks royally.  I do drag the bench grinder out side once in a while to grind knife jigs and other things.  I have ben known to heat parts up over the gas stove then form them with vise grips/vise  You do what you gotta do.

Kevin,

I have a Motorcycle floor jack if you need to borrow it.... I figure you can come over the bridge and tinker with one of my many bikes that need some love....

Got pretty much all the tools needed to do a teardown/build-up.... just seem to lost the motivation parts some in the garage  :smt044...

Holla if you need somewhere else to work on you bike beside the coffee table....

I got a lift and a motorcycle dolly and a car port to work in, but same issue time and motivation.  We need to get together some time and work on that triumph.  I am thinking it is an easy fix, something just ain't sitting right.

While I am eagerly waiting for my valve job & bored cylinders to get back from the shop, decided to do the carbs.  Just finished both a few minutes ago.  I'm NOT a motor guy by any means.  I do what I have to out of necessity rather than pleasure when it comes to engines.
