Sledge, you shouldn't drink as much as you do and go kayak fishing.  Sorry that you don't want to hear this, but my belief is that you are a danger to yourself and others.

There, I said it.

Yes this is true on both counts...and anyone that knows me well understands where I'm coming from...what I don't like is events where there's some hypocrisy going on...and many need to look in "the mirror and point a finger" not use me as a scape goat!!!

Don't drink and drive be it on a yak or in a car...

Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Sledge - Take care of yourself.  The past is the past, and we all deserve a chance to learn and move forward.  I like seeing you indicate that you are focused on getting control and not being a hazard or a liability to this club.  Sorry for giving you shit at GS8 when you were the "Evil Emperor" the day after your sloshed spills tour, and I admit that my sarcasm only masks my disappointment and need to express displeasure with your inebriation and injury.  I will try to be more direct next time because I hope it will help you and anyone else who may not understand that we're representing each other at these club events.  Please don't let how hammered you were become a significant part of the story at GS9.

You can do it!

WOW!! is Jim Russell publicly pointing fingers at his friends and lecturing his friends about drinking ? Really?? You all better check yourselves cause i have yet to meet a member that didn't have their own shortcomings and character flaws myself included. Does Sledge party hard? Yes he does. So fucking what? If you don't like it, don't fish with him. Whats next? pick on the fat guys cause they are out of shape and could have heart attack or maybe not be able to beat the wind back home? Could pose a danger to you on your high horses. Better not go fishing with them either. What about the guys with the bad PTSD? They might freak out. Better not go fishing with them either. Oh and what about the pot smokers? Oh and what about the rookies who don't know shit? Better step away and point fingers at them too. The fact is i have been out on some long knarley paddles in terrible ocean conditions with Sledge. Every time Sledge handled himself and his boat like a well seasoned pro. And yes every time he had his sports bottle of chardonnay.
As for this RBCII incident; Both him and Joe made the decision to switch boats in the middle of the ocean. Furthermore, it was Joe's boat with the faulty ocean kayak rod pod cover that caused the situation in the first place. So why is everyone pointing the finger at Sledge and his chardonnay? Sledge had every right to throw Joe's ass right out of his boat and make him swim but he didn't. He let Joe stay in the hobie and peddle while he swam behind for 2 1/2 hours back to shore. Then he got up the next morning and immediately began to raise money to get Joe a new kayak. I call that highly commendable actions above and beyond the call of duty. But that is the kind of guy Sledge is. You know, the kind of guy who would bust his ass to get a free hot tub so he could use it to raise money for kids with cancer. You know, the kind of guy who would bend over backwards and give you the shirt off his back to make you feel better.
Is he an alcoholic? Yes. But I am damn fucking proud to call him my brother.

Jack,
Sledge asked for a recap of safety issues. We pointed one out. He said don't tell me what to do and then proceeded to say "if you don't party HARD don't talk to me".

Everybody knows I drink too much as well, and those who really know me know that I've struggled for many years with other addictions.

Sledge can drink all he wants and I have zero problem with it.

What I have a problem with is his attitude after HE ASKED for a recap of safety issues.

Don't ask for something if you don't want to talk about it.

That's all.

Sincerely,

Jim

Sledge was probably just looking to create a little more awareness about how things can go wrong out on the big blue. I don't know believe his drinking sank Joe's kayak. And i don't think he was looking to get a public lecture about his drinking from his friends.

I'm sure you're right. And I agree that his drinking had nothing to do with joes kayak sinking.

But I really havent seen lecturing and criticism here...one fact was pointed out, he didn't like it being pointed out, other people expressed their concern about that one fact in a pretty compassionate way IMO and he then said don't talk to me if you don't party hard.

Luckily for me I party hard so I guess I'm still allowed to talk to him?

Sincerely,

Jim

Imo, there is nothing compassionate about having your friends sit at their computers and publicly point out your problems. I think his saying, If you don't party hard, don't talk to me" was his way of saying if you don't like the way he is, then don't hang around him but don't stand back and point fingers. He called me on the phone a few days ago and it sounded like he could use a friend a hell of lot more than a lecture right now.
