Imo, there is nothing compassionate about having your friends sit at their computers and publicly point out your problems. I think his saying, If you don't party hard, don't talk to me" was his way of saying if you don't like the way he is, then don't hang around him but don't stand back and point fingers. He called me on the phone a few days ago and it sounded like he could use a friend a hell of lot more than a lecture right now.

Fair enough. My intention was not to criticize or point fingers. It was a response to his reaction when drinking and paddling was brought up.

I apologize if it came off as being judgmental or hypocritical because that was not my intention.

Sometimes emotions and stuff are hard to convey online...

I'm sorry you're upset and having a tough time right now Sledge, and hope I get to see you again soon.

Sincerely,

Jim

Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

I admire the will and resolve of anyone who can give up an addiction. You guys will be an inspiration to me when I quit my addiction of nicotine.

Sledge,

I hope it was clear that I don't mind hanging out with inebriated individuals, nor do I pass judgement on any particular lifestyle choice. I brought up the drinking in the context of on the water safety, and that is all.

When it comes to helping someone change, whether it be an addiction, habit, or some perceived flaw, the only person who can change that "flaw" is the individual. If Mike feels that he needs to quit drinking or to not drink OTW he will the person to make that change. Everyone putting him down and telling him what he "should" do only serve to alienate themselves from helping him through whatever he is going through. I only know you from GS8 but the bottom line is I got your back Sledge! You have a heart of gold (and a liver of titanium?). Sending you some love brotha :smt008 :smt006

But Adam, we might be onto something here! If we learned how to paddle out while inebriated, we would be better prepared to handle it down the road! Being loose will let you roll with the swell and be fluid, if you are up tight, you get rigid and top heavy and wind up in the drink (pun) and it is all drama. If you go in when you are shit faced, the only concern you have is that someone had their GoPro on and caught that shit because it was SICK! Besides, if you are drinking on the water, you are at least drinking. Too many people paddle out and dont drink anything. Dehydration is a killer man. Killer.

I think you and kayak jack are missing the point.

Sledge asked for a recap on safety in the context of a day where he paddled out sloshed without a PFD and had a kayak sink. I merely suggested that paddling out sloshed without a PFD might be an issue that needs to be recapped on.

If you think paddling while inebriated without a PFD is a good idea, then I am a Nigerian prince who needs your bank account information.

If you think that Sledge doesn't already know that paddling sans pfd under the influence is risky then I have some ocean-front property in Nebraska I'd be willing to sell you. Quit beating the dead bloated horse

I don't know if he remembers paddling out without a PFD.  The narrative I have heard about this day is far different than what I observed.

I'm sorry that you think we need to tip toe around peoples feeling when we are discussing safety.

The fact is that when substance use or abuse becomes an issue for the collective, then it is best to call it out.

Yakkhopper had a concerns about herb being smoked and general drunkeness at his events. It turned into a bit of a drama bomb, but in the end it was agreed between many of us offenders that we needed would be more respectful at his events.

The same thing goes for paddling dangerously.  When we paddle with people making bad decisions, and they get themselves in a situation that requires assistance then it puts us as risk too.  Simply saying " well then don't rescue me" is a childish cop out, since we all know that every single one of us would come to aid when it is needed.
