Have been looking for a LingCod like a junkie looks for a fix since the last one I shot on May 1st.

Don't get me wrong...I am very happy bringing home cooler after cooler of rockfish, but they are beginning to feel like bycatch on my quest for the Ling that I know is out there waiting for me.

Anyway...have been heading south recently exploring new reefs, rocks and kelp beds so decided to head North this time.

Swell was minimal, wind was non-existent, and viz was at least 15 feet.  :smt004

Chose my spot and began exploring an area of reef whose top was at 25 feet and bottomed out at 37...

Small blues were thick like fleas and I could've shot a limit of 12 inch blues laying on the surface....really cool to see so many fish out and about!

Scoured the tops of the boulders and every hole I could find but the only Ling I found looked skinny and probably short even of the 22 inch size limit so I let him be (you can see him at 2:16 in the video).

Got 3 blacks, 3 blues and 4 kelpies...about to head out to the BBQ to cook them up whole in aluminum foil with some lemons, onions and ginger to feed the family!!

 :smt004

Question....why do RockFish change color sometimes where the spear hits them?  I have seen it several times with blues that I have shot, and you can really see it on this kelpy at 0:34 in the vid.  Weird huh?

 :smt102

Anyway, had a great time in the water and have been really enjoying exploring new territory!

Sincerely,

Jim

The music is by Juanes from his debut album Fijate Bien back in 2000...I started hearing this song in bars and clubs in Nicaragua and clearly remember buying the CD in Tegucigalpa, Honduras when I was there visiting my family....it provided the soundtrack for the month I spent with my family exploring my roots.

Here is what the real music video looks like:

I have a UK sl4 eLED.  Love it.

Your Ling is out there waiting for you bro...only a matter of time.  :smt004

I know my next one is too, and I just gotta keep on looking and I will find him!

 :smt003

Here is another example at 2:53 in the video below of the color change on a Blue RockFish after it gets shot…not such good shot placement, but you can see the band of darker color on one side where the spear hits and on the other side it is there too, and not even exactly where the wound is…I understand how blood pools in flesh after it gets wounded, but it surprises me to see a band of color change on the scales…

Anybdoy have any ideas on what causes this??

:smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

I'll do my best bro....been working on the WAF account and hoping to be able to make it happen.  Will have to run North though for an ab run if I go...can't come home ab-less or the inlaws would NOT be pleased!

 :smt005

My buddy Jim Okumoto (you have met him and his brother Robert) went up around Gualala yesterday and he got his limit of nines in 53 minutes...this is wth a bum leg that he broke in three places earlier this season when he got smashed into a rock by a sneaker set! Guy is a stud!

You know Sledge... God damn it... I am going to do it, I am running out of options, so I might tie a GoPro Camera to the can itself with a 8lb anchor weight, so I don't lose it.  LOL
