Jim, I've noticed rockfish often change color after a stone shot. Give them a few minutes and they will change back.

Related to lings, a stoned or brained ling's color change is pretty rad in that the dark spots stay the same color while the rest of the lighter pigmented areas blanche yellow and orange giving them a very cool pattern with high contrast.

Don't give up on your ling quest. Concentrate on caves, cracks, and cubby holes and you'll get into them.
