Thanks for the link, that was an interesting little read. In the close-up you could clearly see how beat up the guys hands were.

seems like entering it as a record fish would be a good idea, but I can understand his reluctance. "I just like to fish". Me too.

Huge, huge fish.

At this point, if he doesn't apply for the record...it would seem kinda wasteful. I know the culture of keeping giants is different over there, and for good reason, but...but...without the record, what's the point?
Granted, I've never been faced with the decision to consume 80lbs of striper & 2 pints of mercury OR let my fish-of-a-lifetime go...so it's hard to say I wouldn't have done the same.

Thanks for posting the link to that article....amazing catch. I've heard of guys here on the American using eels..... Should try it sometime I guess....although with my little 7 foot Lamiglass I don't think I could get that thing in... And with 8 pound test...hmmm probably not.

Just came across this post... but felt it may be relevant to bring back to life after reading the article linked in the OP and doing a little research.

http://www.igfa.org/Records/Fish-Records.aspx?LC=ATR&Fish=Bass,%20striped

His record ended up getting certified and is now the world record... what a freaking monster.

We could use any local striper for bait compared to that monster.....

Thats a big un.
They don't grow that big on this coast in the salt do they? I've heard of some 50s getting caught this season in the SF Bay but the state record (and freshwater all tackle I think) is 67 n change. (http://www.stripers247.com/landlockedrecordstriper.htm)

We obviously need to get some better eels on this coast!  :smt003
