Wanna aim for Wednesday the 22nd, Nomad?

Will this be your first time in a kayak?  How much do you like to paddle?

Pat - The 22nd might work.  I'll let you know as it gets closer.  This will be my first time and I'm not afraid to paddle.  I need the work out anyway.

cpkayak - I caught that gar on the Mississippi coast in a freshwater bayou.  I actually got that one in my castnet.  It is a long-nosed gar.  I caught a few short-nosed gar or small alligator gar on topwater at the same spot.  Those suckers are almost impossible to hook with their small, bony, toothy mouths.  I'd only actually hook one for every 10 hits or so.  It is alot of fun though...they hit topwater like a smallmouth on steroids.

gotbaitgofish - Thanks for the welcome man.  That's a great pic, but where's the kayak?  :confused1:
I bought a malibu extreme.  I have a freshwater/duck hunting boat where my fishfinder is currently installed.  I was thinking of using the set-up that is featured in the article on this site (I forget who wrote it) with the AA batteries in a plastic tuperware type box.  But I am thinking of running the cables to my transducer through a plastic conduit like PVC and putting it on a hinge.  That way I can lower it to the water when I need to use it and it might be a little easier to put it back on my johnboat when I want.  I don't know if that makes sense, but I'll see this weekend if it is doable.  I'm always open to suggestions for other sweet mods.  Can't wait to fish with you guys in the next few months!

Okay, Nomad.  We'll watch for the 22nd.  And of course, today looks like it would be good for getting out............

I have both a permanent set up for my fishfinder(my prowler) and a portable(my Venus).

For the portable, I just use the suction cup for the puck.

Cool.  If the bay continues to be blown out maybe we could all do coffee?

Chef and Pat - Coffee would be great if the conditions are unfishable.  I talked to the only store in the area that I know of (Johnson's in Salinas) that carries racks for pick-ups and he says he might have one in stock.  Hopefully it will fit my rig and I can do the fishfinder install in the next couple of days.  If that doesn't happen, I can strap the yak to the cab (I think) or tow it on my boat trailer and fish w/o electronics.  (What an age we live in!)

Gotbaitgofish - Thanks for the pics.  What is your power supply?  After reading that article about the AA batteries I think to myself "is there any other way to go?"  Well....is there?  I'm originally from Alaska.  Lived near Biloxi for couple of years.  Loved it.  Weather aside, it is the closest thing to home and I've lived in Washington, Oregon, Rhode Island, New York, and Florida (hence the username).  I'll have to find some pics of some Gulf Coast flounder and speckeled trout.  Can't wait to hook up.

Hey all,
I'm a Montereyite as well and I've been dying to get out. I just got my yak all rigged up with a fishfinder and rod holder and am waiting for a nice calm weekend myself. Let us know how it goes if you guys make it out!

LOL...uhhhhhhhhhh..............Hi Mooch........... :smt006

So far, it looks like we could stalk the mini-fish.  On the other hand, I heard of a big flattie being taken northwest of Lover's Point.  With this being Nomad's first trip, I don't know that this would be best for him and this is the first I've heard of halibut out that way.

What say you Chef?

Pat

And that would not be the one I heard of, soooooooooooooooo

Maybe we'll should do Lover's Point rather than San Carlos?......assuming the ocean gods invite us onto their home grounds?

Man my finhsfgers arfare sshhakeiinbg whith  exicnmtemt....It doesn't matter to me what we do....I have been a very good husband lately, so I'm there.  It doesn't look good for my fishfinder though.  Can't find the right stuff locally so had to order alot of it.  I'll be up for repeated trips from....Yes!!!!...my daughter just now brought me my paddling jacket and pants that I ordered....Woooohooooo....No kidding, just now.  Anyway as I was saying.  There is a good possibility that I may go every morning from the 22nd until the 26th....weather permitting that is.  After looking at that picture I might need to buy a bigger rod....
