WTG Jim!!! Congrats on the ling and on the wolf eel!

The jaw strength on those things is tremendous. That had to have hurt like hell!

I've heard that there's an inner-membrane skin on the fillets that you'll want to remove before you cook it. I bet it'd be terrific smoked.

Thanks Rick...you were 100% right buddy...my Ling was just laying out there waiting for me and it was only a matter of time!
 :smt004
Had some NICE blackened Ling filets for dinner just now....melt in your mouth delicious!!  :smt007 :smt007

Also did a little eel sashimi and blackened/seared some as well....the pieces we cooked the least were the most tender..cut with a fork tender and tasty!!

You are right about the eel too...there is a membrane under the skin...the first part we skinned we left it on, but then we got the hang of it and got it off for the rest (see pic)....we ate that section with the membrane still on tonight....in the sashimi it made it chewy so we cut it off.....couldn't really tell the difference when seared....

Vacuum sealed and froze the head (and the Ling head) for soup, the skeleton to fry down for an unagi sauce, and the rest of the eel and ling filets for the inlaws for mother's day....looking forward to seeing them eat and be happy!!

Jim,

just watched your butt kicking movie.  Some ripping footage. Man, gets me jacked to start spearfishing more. Would love to come down there and hang with you in the water for a day. That big wolfie was sketch for sure. Do those things taste good? I'm a rookie spearo and need some coaching for sure and I think your the dude to get me right.

Were you using a GoPro camera on the headstrap? Just bought one and got the mako lens but stupid battery died while on the water and I got zero footage of me pulling my abs this week. Sucks. How do you like the camera? I'm stoked to start using(making sure thedang battery is charged up)mine and making some serious underwater movies.  See you at the cove. Lets get after some abs. Shannon

Thanks Shannon!!

Had a chunk of Wolf Eel sashimi and some seared with cajun spices last night and it was heavenly!!

Gonna experiemnt with the rest of the meat this weekend, but it is a super firm, textured/muscled white meat with a nice clean flavor....works for me!!  :smt003

Yeah, using the GoPro on the headstrap....got the flat lens from mako as well and it has made a big difference in underwater clarity of the footage...

One thing to sort out before your next dive is the angle of the camera on your forehead...both andy baitnbeer and I have had a few dives where we would have great footage of fish/abs but we didn't have the camera tilted down far enough and we just got footage of the water or the top of the rock!!

For me it seems like the best angle is about 2-3 finger width between the back of the camera and my head...

I'm also wearing mine under my hood cuz I'm terrified of losing it!!  :smt002 :smt005 :smt044

Congrats again on your giants and I look forward to seeing you up at Shelter!!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Jim,

thanks for those tips about the camera. Makes complete sense to put the strap on under your hood and I shall be doing that. Also, thanks for the heads up on angle. don't want to screw up what could be good footage.

only issue i had with the camera under the hood was water constantly flushing through my head plugging up my ears , wasnt too bad and probly gonna be the way i do it from now on ,never once did i worry about loosing it, my mako gun mount just came in so thats gonna be my new thing to try out.

Can't load pics for some reason right now, but you should be able to see the food porn (LingCod Ceviche and Wolf Eel Sushi) here, even without an FB account:
