I gotta get this off my chest. There is a fine line between bravery and bad judjment. Imo you guys crossed it. Knowing there was a tsunami warning following a 9.0, and knowing the geography of the carmel canyon, imo you guys made an obviously bad call and got lucky.
Cheikei, youve stated that you have a mere 2 seasons of ab diving under your belt. To me, it shows. This isn't the first time I've felt you have made a risky call. Paddling over the reef at hmb, in the dark with a moderate swell and little local water time was, imo a risky call.

I have 30yrs fishing, surfing, sailing and dive experience and my advice to any newcomers to the sport would be to not take cheikei upon his offer to show you the ropes. Choose someone with butloads of experience and a history of making safe calls.
I'm not trying to piss on anyones parade. I'm totally cool with anyone making any call they want. I'm not cool with offers of takin newbies along on risky adventures.
Since Adams incident I've made a decision not to shy away from discussing what I see as risky behaviour. I'm no expert on risk and hell, people who know me know I've made some bad calls with consequences. The trick is to learn from mistakes
i knew there was a responce like this waiting to come out. :smt002

sharky i understand what your saying , trust me i have been hearing it from my mom , wife , dad, boss & co-workers   & sister for the last few days , i thought about it real hard when i read the story of the guy who lost his life up north didnt get caught in the actual tsunami but the afterward surge that came unexpectadly*  after watching CNN and soaking in all the seriousness of all this i do think it was a bit iresponcible diving on that day  BUT were all adults here who chose to put ourselfs at risk without any real peer pressure or anything , you already understand all that though , i gotta ask...why are you taking shots at cheiaki? all he did was report it with a video! he has never tried acting like a guide or anything , the halfmoon bay thing as well , why mention that?

BnB, youre right, that was poor form on my behalf. I was making assumptions without the correct tools. I edited my post. Cheiaki I apologize.

I agree with Sharky here. I was tempted to drive down to HMB to check out the scene but I thought more about it as I watched on TV how HMB residents were seeking higher grounds. I was also in disbelief about the hundreds of Santa Cruz residents coming out to the Harbor to watch the surge come in.  :smt102

But like Baitnbeer had mentioned, we are all adults here and we make our own decisions.

More facts.  Initial reports said that it was safe 3-4 hrs after the 1st surge at around 8am in Monterey/Carmel area.  I did not get in the water til 1pm.  I made my own decision to go in the water and felt that I maybe taking a little risk doing so.  But, I decided at that time it was safe enough to go in.   If something happened nobody's to blame but me.   :smt005  Old Guys just want to have fun.   :smt001

Not my most productive diving day, by how many guys can say they kayak spearfished in a tsunami? Props to Jim for winning his own challenge and shooting a cab in those conditions.

I want to thank the whole crew for the hospitality. Good people, good times, and Andy cooked up some damn good food. Looking forward to killing some fish with yall in the future.
