DFG never got back to me.

Just got off the phone with someone from DFG; and here's what I think he was saying:

The May 14, 2011 thru Oct 31. 2011 season would have been valid if they "did not postpone the 2011-2012 Groundfish regulations"; and because they did, we are instructed to abide by the 2010 regulations, which states the groundfish season is May 15 thru Sep 15.

Can you imagine how a private business would be viewed if they did things like that.  Let's see:  Our "Day after Christmas Sale" which normally occurs on December 26th will take place on December 25th this year because we failed to finalize the date of this Year's sale.  If this is inconvenient for shopping, we suggest you change the date of Christmas so your after Christmas shopping will not interfere with your holiday family activities.  ?????

Thanks for that info, Glen.     I was bummed about the change at first, but it gave me a good excuse to get in touch with all the participants to that point, and it's been unanimous that all are OK with it.  Now I look at it as kind of a cool twist on the event, and a statement about how people who come to GS are coming for the full weekend experience.  Saturday's events of getting acquainted at a unique, pre-tournament potluck and the family and friend activities that occur that day will be such a cool lead up to the tournament.  Maybe DFG will change it back...

For one reason or another, I have had very few chances to get out on my kayak this year and I have been inactive on the site for the last couple of months.  I've been looking forward to GS5 for a while now, but there is still a chance that I won't make it due to a potential schedule conflict.  However, I decided to send in my entry today, so I will do my darndest to make it there.

Hi Eric - I just downloaded and printed my waiver/sign up for GS5.  Will send with my check tomorrow.  Sounds like a good chance salmon season will start April 2nd according to Joseph (the current boat launch owner).  I don't even want to think about how disgusted I was last year after hooking 6 and not boating any!!!  Won't happen this year and look forward to fishing with you soon.  I'm almost out of smoked canned salmon so will be ready.

I talked to The Prophet and he is planning on joining us for GS5 also so you should get his check soon.

Don't know if you have seen the nice job they did to reconstruct the breakwater and repave the launch road.  A nice improvement for sure.  See ya soon,   Boogieman

I'm glad you'll make it, Dan - can't wait to hit the water with you when the season opens.  I'll add the Prophet to the list and keep an eye out for his registration and yours.  It's shaping up to be very awesome!  I'll be in the Cove tomorrow to start a small project - hopefully I'll have time to swing by to say hi, and at the very least I'll get down to the launch to check out the new breakwater.

DFG never got back to me.  Even though they listed an opener date of Saturday the 14th on their website right here:  http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/groundfishcentral/regulations.asp  DF'nG is apparently opening the season on Sunday, May 15th, 2011 - so that's when we're having this tournament.  Someone I respect very much suggested that we should have the potluck on Sunday to go with the tournament, but I know some people will have to leave that afternoon.  We'll have the potluck Saturday, and we'll have a leftovers/second round potluck and awards ceremony on Sunday.  Fishing time is dawn until 1PM, and check in closes at 2PM.  The check-in station will be at the launch and no other entries will be allowed.  We'll have the awards at the start of the leftovers potluck - around 4PM.  That should allow for those who need to bail out and go home. 

Nothing will stop this from being a great event.
