Has this been done?  If not, I'm sure this thread is in for a ride....

My 11 lb. Toshiba Quismo has died... Tok it to Best Buy for a quick fix... 2 weeks later, Chino, Ca. calls...

where the hell is Chino?  :smt012  " Uh Dude... Like there's nothing here... uh, gonna have to replace your mother board..  .."  I was told it's the video card...  " Uh , Dude, I have to replace the mother board at $650.0 to find out if it's the video card, then it might be just a cable.... or maybe might need a CPU too"
WTF!!!!  :smt013   Uh, Dude send it back....  so now...  after reviewing my computer 4 years later it looksas though I've gotten 2 extra years than my fellow Toshiba Quismo users as theirs died wit the same problem and continueto have problems after $1000 fixes...

so now the search begins for the new lap top as I fall furhter into the Black Hole of no computer and needing to get things done like last week.
Wow!!  Macs are cool, at least my kids tell me so, and after checking them out they are cool, and $$$$$ and it looks as though you are buying into a religion as you need permission to talk to the real world of PC's and have to buy into the whole Mac World...
Very Nice though and I like the touch pad as I like to scrolldown a page with the pad.... My Toshibba Quismo was Great for this..
Or do I just buy a $800 to 1000 toshiba,HP or dell and figure that they are all going to die...

I'm about ready to throw this acer laptop through the wall!!!  GOD DAMMIT I HATE BEING BEING DEPENDANT ON THESE DAM THINGS!!!!  well this is all I can write as this fing thng is screwing upnow...

So, That's the question,

What Laptop would you buy, and what are you looking for in it...

Thanks,  and think I'll rent Fight Club again and figure a way to bring this whole tech thing down... :smt011

Ive always been partial to the HP laptops. I feel they have better HD compatibility. I'm still on my older HP laptop that's been thrown across the room by my son and dropped many times and still is great. My next one I buy will have a backlit keyboard for sure, bluetooth and an HDMI out.

I support dells at work. The e series laptops have been better than the older D series but the failure rate is still very high. For my personal use I purchased an ASUS. Not sure on price range but check out newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006550%2050001315%2040000032%20600003988&IsNodeId=1&name=Intel%20Core%20i5

One of the nice things about ASUS is the one year accidental warranty. Haven't needed it but it looks great on paper. Depending on what you are doing with it your options really affect price. I would avoid the i7 series unless you really want the newest and greatest. I am sure some of the other tech guys can chime in with more details too.

I'm a non-religious Mac convert. In fact, the cult thing is a turn off for me but there's actual substance to the machines - they really work. The fact they look great is an added bonus (albeit one you pay $$$ for). Once ya go Mac . . .

Yes, pricey & yes, you might need to install MS Office for Word & Excel but that's about it. Otherwise, most everything else is built in and it's pretty much plug & play from the get-go.

I have a new Dell desktop that I haven't had long enough yet to go bad on me, an old off-brand desktop that been nothing but trouble, and a Mac 17" MacBook Pro laptop that is terrific and will be even more so once I hook up a larger external monitor (for home use). I also run Windows 7 on the laptop with emulation software. Go for a Mac.

HP is good but if you got extra cash go for Sony LT.

Mac convert here as well.   Better made product.  My mom stayed with us a few weeks ago and now she is considering one.   Don't forget the iPad!  The iPad was the best thing I purchased in 2010.

Don:

Macbook Pro way to go!

Less expensive Mac laptop around 899 or 999.  I can get the "education" price for you if you want.

I buy 2-6 Macs every year at work.  Don't get the applecare anymore cause none of them have broken...saved enough to buy a MBP for my own use at work. (except the one I bought for my daughter, damn!)

Having said that, Macs are all I have ever used, so I might not be the best guy in terms of comparison shopping.

+2, we converted to Mac and will never go back. It took some getting used to the slightly different navigation for file storage, but we really like ours better than any of the previous 3 PCs we have owned.
