Went looking for places yesterday in the Santa Cruz area's with Sara.  Its pretty hard to find a place it seems, well at least by just looking at Craigslist.  We only got one call back after driving by ten properties and placing some calls.  The place looks really nice, 2 story, 3 bedrooms, right on the San Lorenzo (have steelhead in my back yard!)

Gonna be a bit of a haul to Mountain View for work, but at least I'll be back living in the woods rather than the concert jungle of San Jose.  :smt004

Hoping for the best, still waiting to hear back, but after meeting the owner I think we are in  :smt003

Good luck, Al!  Fingers crossed for ya.

If it doesn't work out with this place, I highly recommend finding a realtor who is familiar with the area.  A good one will know what has sold, for how much, what hasn't, and, (perhaps most importantly), what is about to hit the market, (and what it will list for vs what it will likely sell for, etc etc), issues particular to that area, etc....

There's a slew of sites to check, too, with maps and tools that come in handy, (mlslistings.com, movato.com, etc).

I also found google street view an invaluable tool.  Get a feel for the neighorhood instantly without wasting gas.

Not too far from me, just down one side of the mountain!

From my experience it gets a little sketchy up on the valley sides, but there some very nice places there in BC. Hwy 9 can be problematic in the rush hour timeslots, but you have a different commute than going down into SC or Watsonville.

You do get a lot more for your money in the mountains vs SC city limits. My only caveat I can think of is that, depending on location, the winter can see a dramatic drop in your natural light. I had some friends who lived there & their place was like a cave in January. They called it "boulder bleak." I think it all depends on how the property is situated.

On the plus side - after a year in Boulder Creek you won't need fins to Ab dive 'cause you'll have webs between your toes from living in all the moisture!  :smt003

A friend of mine lived there in the mid-80's when we had some REALLY wet winters . . . .

Al, hope plans go well and smoothly. It'd be nicer to have you live closer to us all :D SC would be more ideal for you and Sara. When all falls into place, let us know. I think we'd all like to throw ya a nice house warming get-together! :D

Yes you DO belong in the woods my friend!!

Join the secret society of steelheaders. Watch out for the locals.  Like at Steamer Lane lineup, just be courteous, wait your turn and all will be well.

Yeap, we got the place  :smt003  Looks like Dec 1st i'm gonna be able to catch (nR) some steelhead off my back porch  :smt005  Drop off the deposit and sign the lease tomorrow!  Stoked!!!    :smt003

I was raised in the Lompico area (near Loch Lomond) first 9 years of my life.  I've only lived about 2 years in SC since my family first moved to the San Jose area.  I've been wanting to move back for the last 6-7 years, but just couldn't swing it between relationships and work.  SO, back to the woods, here we come ;)

It's quite a change, but Sara and I are very much looking forward too it!  Sean, Paul, Rich, glad to have some neighbors that I know :)

Al,

We are just down Highway 9 in Ben Lomond. You will have a very cool commute. Highway 9 over the summit, then take Stevens Creek Canyon Road and you end up on Foothil Expressway then down Grant Road past El Camino Hospital, and you are now in Mountain View. About 40 minutes door to door.

Welcome to the mountains!!!

Rich
