I've been wanting to take Omar out for his first salt water trip for a while now but didn't want to take him out in crappy weather and end up having a bad experience.

So when my neice asked me to go to Tahoe to see her run in a cross-country meet I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to show support for her and also to get Omar out on the water for his first boat experience.

Friday morning Liz, Omar and I hit the road with a plan to meet up with my sister in Roseville. My neice drove up with her team.

When we met up with my sister in Roseville, Liz decided to ride up with her.  That left me and Omar in the car so we cranked up some Floyd and bonded the way men do...without saying a word.

We got to Tahoe a few hours before the meet was scheduled to start so of course we head to the BridgeTender for a drink or two. The weather was perfect so we sat in the patio.

After drinks it was time to find North Tahoe High School where the meet was taking place.

My neice didn't place as well as she would have liked but she ran like a champ and we were proud to see her run.

Saturday rolls around and it's another nice day weather wise.  We head out over towards South Tahoe to do some precipice hunting, my sisters a teacher and wanted a picture to show her class.  We found one but figured we'd take a pic on the way back but couldn't find it again.  Ah well, I guess those damn precipice are sneakier than we thought.

Finally 4:30 AM Sunday rolls around and it's time to wake up and get ready for our trip on the "Reel Deal" with Captain Bob.  We get to the marina at 5:30 and meet up with the captain. We chatted a bit and got on the boat and head out...he then tells me that the wind is going to pick up so we might want to make it a quick trip.

After some more talking he realized that I was pretty locked on...so he asked me to take the helm.  So what was I to do? Naturally I took it, I shook it, I abused it, I caressed it, and when it was totally confused I made it mine...that's just how I roll.

While I navigated the trecherous yet beautiful lake he set lines. It only took a short time before the first line was hit and it was time for Omar to battle the Mackinaw at the end of the line.  After a few minutes the fish came off...but almost immediately another hit one of the other lines and Omar was up again.  This time, determined not to lose the fish he battled it like a champ and we had the first fish on board.

Next up was Liz. Another fish on board...and then another and another, until we limited out at about 9:00 AM.  The white caps were starting to come up a bit more than before and the dark clouds started to gather.  It was time to head in and have the Captain fillet the fish for us.

It ended up being a short trip but we accomplished my goal of taking Omar out on the boat for a first fun and memorable fishing trip.  He went out, caught some fish and didn't get sick.  It was an amazing feeling to share the rail with my son for the very first time.  I think he's ready for a trip on the salt and seems to really be looking forward to it.

Captain Bob is a pretty cool dude and knows what he's doing...he likes to say he's a pro but doesn't smell like one.

I'd really like to get out there again real soon for a trip on the yak...let me know if anyone is interested.
