Hey guys. Might be a stupid question but I was looking at kayak pants with neoprene ankles and waist. As far as a wetsuit goes could these pants be used instead? With a paddling jacket over them?

Just curious. They look more comfortable than a wetsuit.....

Thanks!

Are you talking about the kokatat tempest pants sure (some will argue they are not as safe as a wetsuit) if you are talking about pants with open ankles/feet. They are more for splash protection. And not really ocean friendly/safe

Sometimes I wear those over my farmer-john wetsuit. They are great for wind protection.

I have the Kokotat Tempest pants, and love 'em.  If I fish Big Sur area, where it is more isolated, then I go with the wetsuit.

my 2 cents....Kayak pants are nice, comfortable and a lot easier to put on but they won't keep you warm when you fall in 50 degree water.

Mooch and I are in complete agreement on this one.  wetsuit is safety gear.

For the past few seasons, I've been comfortably rockin both!
I wear my 3mil FJ wetsuit w/regular NRS splash pants over the wetsuit. This way, I stay completely dry (no more saltwater-brined-crotchrot!) but I am also prepared to spend time in 56* water. These are not the Tempest pants, just the regular $50 splash pants.
The only compromise is the inability to easily pee. But it's not that much more difficult than peeing w/only a wetsuit.

You have to tame your pants to get a pic?   :smt003
