I have a old (like 70's) garage sale three speed bicycle. I'd like to get it 'tuned up' to ride with the kids. It needs new tired/tubes, cables, break pads, etc. I'd like to do it on the cheap any recommendations. I suppose I could give it a shot myself just not sure how to do cable part.

thx in advance

finding some of the parts might be tricky.
if you want to come  up to the nbay, i can do the work for you- you just pay for the parts (somewhere in neighborhood of 75 bucks i'd guess - if it needs new tires)

There is a bike shop in San Jose I don't know the name of it but it's on the corner of first street and some other road I don't know. But I can tell ya this it is the first road south of the 280 overpass. He has hundreds of old bikes that her restores and sells. My older brother has used him before and my brother is as cheap as they get when it comes to that type of garage sale thing.

Good luck,

Kevin :smt006

That place off of first is kinda sketchy. Would probably be a good place to start if you were looking to do a restore but I wouldn't go there for servicing/cables.  Haven't been there in a while but I don't recall them being cheap either.  Plus, ever since kids decided that crybaby emo rock, skinny jeans, boys weairng make up and fixed gear bikes were cool the prices on old 10 speed frames has gone way up.

On the cheap, if all you need is tubes/tires, brake pads and cable replacement take it to fast bikes on alum rock and jackson. The mechanic is pretty cool and they're decently priced.

You've got enough hobbies already bro.
But if you must take up another hobby....give your old pos to the homeless and buy a newer one on CL for $100.

Don't take your bike into a shop for maintenance ... that's for schmucks!!  I'll PM you the number for my mechanic, Rob.  He comes over to the house.  Instead of having to wait several days or a week to get your rig back, he wrenches on it in the garage, you pay him cash, and does a great job.  He has every conceivable repair part or cable thats out on the market.  Not sure if he stocks '70's era stuff but what he doesn't have he can get.

I've known the guy 8 years and he's nice, competent, and reasonable price wise.  Matter of fact, my commuter rig is due for a tuneup so if you want to just have him wrench on yours at my house, that's cool too.  My last service was $50 and I gave him a $10 tip.

Only thing I do before he works on em is wash the bike and pressure hose the drive train.  Like Jermaine Dupri, "Jigga, I don't like it if it don't gleam clean ..."

martin cool..yeah let me know. I ordered the stuff (tires, tubes and brake pads) the tire size was odd pretty sure most places won't have them in stock. I didn't get cables 'cuz i got no clue. Now that would be an odd day for him...your $5K bike with my $20 garage sale special.

Martin,

Who is this guru of yours?  Once the maintenance plan expires on mine I'll need someone to look work on it periodically.

and good god man, don't pressure wash your drive train...that water will get into every seal there is- unless of course your mechanic is rebuilding your hubs too?
