Just Going to use a pole spear tiil i hone my diving skills.

I plan to buy a spear gun next season.

Whats the deal with wood vs. Aliminum bodies. I am leaning towards wood for some reason, they look more simple iin construction.

Saw a JBL 38special for $151. Os this a good starter gun? I tend not to buy overly fancy fishing poles cause i break or loose them. Thinking of using the same thougth process here and keep cost down.

Good gun but they come with a crappy head. I recomend a paralyzer 3 prong spearhead. Also a floatline is a life saver. Lose a gun and you will understand.

Hammerhead!!!  http://hammerheadspearguns.com/americas/products/spearguns/evolution.php

They have several models of course . . . but the Evolution is "THE MOST ACCURATE speargun in America as independently tested by Hawaii Skindiver Magazine* and Spearing Magazine out of Florida. "

The Evolution starts at about $259 but you can get a Proteus for $100....

Around here a decent pole spear can get you a lot of fish.  With the right tip, a pole spear can be just as good - or better than a speargun.  For one thing, if you miss a shot, you can take another in the same breath hold.

A few folks I know are getting back into pole spears.  Simple and easy.  And they work.  Those Hawaiians knew their stuff.

I'm using mine tomorrow morning.

Indeed, it's true! Particularly in close quarters. Best of luck in the morning, Dave. Are you headed out from BR?

Even, the simple fiberglass 6 footers are good - as long as it has a removable tip (some don't).  Those paralyzer tips that come with them are good for blues and blacks, but not as good for lings.  A flopper tip works better for bigger fish.  This one guy I know shot a WSB with a six foot Crist Spear.  Check out their site: http://www.cristspears.com

The Crists are a little pricey for me, but my friend uses nothing else.

Went out at Mendocino Headlands this morning for a quick meat dive.  We were collecting for our company picnic on friday.  Four guys got 12 nearly 9 inch abalone in about 15-20 minutes.  I shot 1 ling, but only winged him.  Sheez, I think we got 15 lbs of ab meet for the company bar-b-que.  Diving on company time - yeah!

Thanks for the report Dave...

Well I made a purchase for my starter weapon, I got a Ray Odor 6' Pole Spear with the flopper tip... The price was right, and the reviews were good... Hope it works out well till I can get a gun one day down the road..

I've been meaning to revert to a pole spear for a while now, the 6' odor is at the top of my list too.
