I'm no expert, but from all of the extraneous stuff I can gather, the shark was probably 13-15ft in length, and a fish that size would weigh around 3000 lbs.
Easily large enough to throw down on a grown elephant seal.

This is why my wife never hears about this stuff

I dunno. I never keep anything from mine, & she still tolerates me fishing. makes for a healthier relationship but that's just me.

and sooner or later somebody will go the extra step

we should start a pool who it'll be

Yeah, Blue, I respect you & you opinion, but this just ain't you at your best. :smt012
I gotta side with Salty on this.

+1

Keith thought I was crazy for telling my wife when he dropped me off. We were camping down south the next 2 days and he was probably worried that I'd be on lockdown.  :smt044

Chad - just heard from my buddy Andrew B.  Turns out that you know him from work and told him the story in Oakland... effin small world!

Kristal and I finally got to watch the NBC clip of you in your front yard (looks great btw) describing the incident.  She was like "He's got such great energy and presence!  Maybe I could use him in an ad campaign!"

Any interest in parlaying this experience into marketing networking switches and routers?   :smt003

Agreed on the observation, I wondered how long it would be before someone threw down an offer- from NCKA fishing star to media star to spokesperson!!!

I'm thinking maybe we have a new "ShamWow" candidate!

(JK... I agree about the good camera presence... the shark couldn't have sought out a better personality).

Adam,
I’m glad you don’t feel any obligations to anyone right now - take care of you and yours and let the drama glommers fall where they may.

On a personal note, even though I am new to NCKA, I’ve read, laughed, and learned from your posts for nearly a year now.  Although we’ve never met, I do somehow feel like I know you and many of the other regulars on this board.  It’s been the constant info from members like you who’ve generously helped me begin to close the huge gap of knowledge I possessed before finding NCKA and kayak angling in general.  This is why I’ve come to call all of you my “forum friends” and have been known to recount the exploits, the conquests and the sometimes hilarious missteps of this community to those close to me as if they happened to people I’ve known my whole life.  I can’t explain why the sense of community is so easily fostered here – why Mooch’s battle, Eugene and Nathan’s “basking shark” and now this event – seem to strike such a chord with me, but these are things I’ve come to take very personally.

This is why, for reasons I do not understand, your close call has consumed my thoughts for days now.  It has made me realize I have brothers I’ve never met and teachers whose voices I’ve never heard.  In these days while you are taking inventory of all you have and all you almost lost, know that there are guys out there like me, guys you don’t even know, who are so relieved you are such a bad ass.  This forum and this planet are better with you around.

-Anthony

I Really Like this post!!!!   :smt001

Another good quote....

It's understandable that we are " ALL " going to have some sort PTSD with this event being the scenario and person that it happened to, are Very close to our Heart...

Lets not start " Lashing out " at each other trying to work this out....

Adam is handling this like a Pro,  lets do the same....   :smt004

My wife read about it in the paper. She can't get me out on the ocean soon enough. She said she heard about a hot salmon bite around HMB.

I am not sure if I will stop fishing alone, remove the paint from the bottom of my boat or buy a shark shield.  It still seems to be a fairly rare occurance.  The joy of fishing from a kayak is too much to give up for me.

I would paint over or remove the happy face from the bottom of your kayak.  :smt005 I will follow you around real close with my shark shield. You catch more fish anyway.  :smt044

On a different note, since the shark did not bite a piece off the kayak, determining the bite radius and approximate size could be difficult. According to experts, a bite radius was 18" extrapolates to a shark was 16–18 feet long. Of course, if it was a "basking shark" all bets are off.  :smt044

My wife and I were fishing HMB and when we returned say Adam and crew at HMB kayak.  It was surreal to see the damage up close, the pics really do not do justice.  Shannon and I are both so very happy you are ok and you know what?  We discussed this incident and it is not going to stop us from fishing the blue.   I guess fishing in the red triangle you have to expect this to happen now and then.  On that note, I don't believe i will ever get her to fish Bean.

Adam, I just found out about this just this morning, all the way in TX!!  Someone posted the article on texaskayakfisherman.com.  I almost ignored it, thinking it was an old story.  I clicked on it and: "HOLY SH*T!!"

I am super glad that you are okay. Take care!

Adam,

WOW…what an incident. I am glad to hear you denied whitey the prize. Sounds like you hung on to that kayak like a spider monkey clinging to a branch in a hurricane.

I echo the same sentiment that everyone else has expressed…happy to be hearing this from you personally. A lesser man would have been lunch.

Take care,
Ray
