Is this the event where people can register then go to their little honey hole and come back to win? Or does everyone have to go out of Ocean Cove to make the contest a true contest?

That proves it! Its not really whos the best ab diver. Its who can drive their zodiac to a remote place and pick a ten or bigger. A REAL contest would even the playing field by evrybody having to swim out from the same location.

it is done that way so that not to much pressure is put on one cove ! it is more responseable fishing/harvesting pratices, could you imagine how bad it would hurt and desmate the cove to have over 75 divers pulling even just one ab all out at the same time and same cove ! abalone are not like fish they do not move a whole lot !

In racing we call it " run what you brung" Don't bring a knife to a gun fight. A kayak would do just fine. Thanks

So, basically someone can go out a day or two before, mark a big ab, or even pull it and move it somewhere, and go back and retrieve it on game day?

At a certian point we have to leave it up to the idivdual to be a sportmen/women ! people can cheat in any thing if they want to bad enough ! example look at the bass fishermen who just recently got coaght stuffing lead weights down the fish belly at a bass master comp ! it all boils down to honnor and intergerty ! if they want to cheat and get that hollow victory let them have it they are only cheating them selfs !

This would be a violation of the regs and would get you disqualified.
Besides that is not the type of diver we want attending this event.
This event is being put on to honor a great fisherman (Randy Fry) and diver who spent most of his time fighting for fisherman and divers rights.
His biggest accomplishment (outside bring fisherman together as well as divers) was helping pass the regulation that allows for shore base fishing and diving for rockfish all year.
I won this event (spearfishing, I don’t care much for ab diving :smt002) with my good friend Eric Sabbe in 2008.
I shoredove and did not even scout before the event.  Hell I have to drive 3.5 hours just to get to the north coast.
So if you are afraid to hang out with great people, eat good food, have a chance to win awesome raffle prizes, all to raise money to help fight for fisherman and divers rights,
then stay HOME!!!
If this sounds like fun, well then I will see you there.
Its going to be a great time and hopefully like last year we will raise around $5000 for our Local MLPA fight.

OK, so for some folks this event riles them up as it is not rigidly regulated in pure competition format...
Please explain?  This seems rather debatable, because all competitions of this kind come down to personal morals and ethics.

 And it may fund sportsman's interests. . . .
There is NO "may" about it.  You ever heard of the Recreational Fishing Alliance, more importantly Jim Martin?  This guy spends 100% of his time dealing with MLPA issues as well as other recreational fisheries problems,

He puts this event on to honor his good friend Randy Fry.  If you have questions about where the raised funds will go I suggest you take them up with him before you doubt the events legitimacy.

It is a level playing field. Everyone is allowed to go where they want and dive how they want. If some people were told they had to stay at the cove and others could go where they want then it would not be fair. I went to this event last year and had a good time.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

I will weigh in on this ! OK you all say for it to be a fare and level playing Field all divers should be required to dive the same cove ! that is not responsible fishing in my mind cause that putts a whole lot of pressure in one area ! abalone are not like fish they do not move around a whole lot and are slow to grow compred to fish. so could you imaging how bad it would hurt the cove or should I say that local Eco system if 75 to 100 divers and fishermen worked the same place ! doesn't make more sense to spread the pressure out over the entire fishery ! seams a whole lot more responsible to me. if some one wants to cheat there going to cheat and if they want that hollow and shallow victory let them have it ! at some point you have to trust the competitor's. just like in life there will allways be a few bad apples.

It is NEVER a level playing field..EVER!!!
Total props to the guys who can hold their breath for what seems to be a millennium whereas if I get 25 seconds underwater I felt I just set a world record.
One year, with close to zero bottom time compared to the 'real' divers, I still took 3rd place for biggest ab at a Picasso tourney and got it diving out of Ocean Cove. So location of your dive really isn't an issue.
I think what most people fail to realize or maybe just forget is that this is a community of a different breed.
Just like with NCKA it is more about supporting a great cause and the camaraderie of competing WITH not against fellow divers. It isn't so much about winning.
If you think about Randy Fry, what he accomplished, what he did for ALL of us, and how his life came to a sudden end, who in their right mind would even consider cheating?
I can say it never even crossed my mind.
So don't get your panties in a bunch worrying about someone maybe getting over on you.
If anyone were to stoop so low then shame on them and karma will follow.
If you plan on attending then do so with an open mind and an open heart. Keep in mind the big picture. Flame on me if you wish.
