was at the fort today hoping to get a glimpse of your buddy, heard a blow of air and turned to see a couple small dolphins heading south, maybe next time, only have been within a 1/4 to 1/3 mile of a big whale in the yak, one day, cameron

I used to be crazy enough to fish the big blue  in my 14 foot Klamath and would venuture as far as the mouth of the russian river from Bodega or Muir Beach from the boat ramp under the golden gate.  Especially out of Bodega I would have greys come in to 100 feet of water or less and cruise right by me!   I think they are pretty aware of what's around them but that was just my general sense.  I have never really heard of a grey causing a human any harm?

I'm pretty sure it knew you were there, either by sight or sound.

Lay off the payote dude.

Two years ago I went out at the Ft solo, I was about out to the reef and saw several whales about 100yds farther out, thought how neat it would be to be amongst them (regulations notwithstanding), So I slowly started paddling in their direction, THEN one did the straight down thing with the full tail out of the water,  What sounds cool at a distance became a little questionable in my mind up close, so I turned around and went fishing, they hung out where they were for a few hours then were gone.

Glad you got the experience too.

fishing early season halibut north of Santa Cruz I've seen gray whales & calves swimming through the kelp beds, in maybe 30FOW, in quite shallow.
I saw one that waved its flukes two weeks ago off of the San Mateo coast.
We're pretty lucky to have these encounters as part of our "usual" while we are out on the ocean.

& yes, gray whales aren't aware like orcas are, and if they surface too near or under you, they could easily capsize a kayak.

Your faster with the reel then I. Was fishing just outside Jaws at Moss Landing when I accidentally hooked into one. Same scenario right under the Kayak. Did two 180's before unhooking.....On the second 180 Mr. Whale came right beside me and eyeballed me while giving off a spine chilling loud whale. Their is a post on it from a few years ago.
