Hi Folks,

I am new to this board but some of you will remember me from the old board and I have fished with a few of you on the bay and down south.

I just wanted to remind everyone that the Fred Hall's Boat Show is being held at the Cow Palace on Jan. 4 through the 8th. And of course, for us yakkers, one of the most important booths will be Dennis Spike's kayak fishing.

Whether you know Spike or not, stop by and say Hi and check out his booth. Spike is one of the best guides for kayak fishing. He has several great trips that he does every year and he is a wealth of knowledge. My wife and I have been going down to Baja with his trips for the last 4 years and have had a blast and caught fish every time.

So, stop in and introduce yourself. Tell him BigDog aka Ninja Dave sent ya.

I'll tip my hat toward Dennis for being the godfather of kayak fishing, but if I were to spend any money it would be with Jim. Part of the reason I started the first NorCal board was because, Dennis wasn't open to competition on his site, even though my site wasn't for profit. At that time there was no NorCal section, so all NorCal threads got lost in the mix. Now both Dennis and Jim have dedicated NorCal sections, but Jim was always open to "other" sites being mentioned on his board, as long as they weren't commercial or competing.
For those of you who been around long enough, you may know about this. My take is that one is more interested in expanding his business.

Bill, you've done a fantastic job of this site, for the love of the sport! Please keep it NorCal.

For what it's worth both Dennis and Jim have been supportive of this site. Not always but that is water under the bridge as far as I am concerned.

I have fished with both of them. I have communicated via forums, email and phone many times. Both have the quirks. Both are excellent sources of information for fishing. Not sure about Dennis not wanting ads on his forum. I will have to take your word on that. I do know that his budget is pretty tight and he may have been worried about losing some business. Just a guess on my part.

I was at the first (redone) show a couple of years ago, it was pretty disappointing as far as attendance. There was a lot to see though. Having spoken with the people that put on the show, last year was much better and I am sure this year will surpass that. I know that Allen Bushnell will be there for at least the weekend with one of the Ocean Kayak dealers, so make a point to stop by and say hello to him. This show is just to far for me, I will be at the Long Beach and Del Mar shows though as well as the New Jersey Paddler show in March, now that is far.
The hall shows are always fun with some great deals so have a good time.
As far as comparing DS and I, lets put it this was. We both think we do it better and only one of us is right. We just have different ways of doing things. We both have the same goal and that is to get people on the water. Some will always prefer him and some me, that is just life.

I'm out of town this weekend.  Anyone going to the ISE show in San Mateo?  I prefer this one of the two...

Joel - Sounds good.  Holidays and the end of the quarter have kept me pretty busy.  I haven't been posting much, but I've been reading posts.

I'd like to head out to O'niel forebay when the weather clears...

By the way, I have a gift card for REI.  I need to pick your brain on what to buy...

Ernie- I have to go to a fish expo to see you?  I'll definitely be at the Fred hall Show this weekend Saturday and Sunday and again at the ISE show in San Mateo the next weekend.  I'll be at the Adventure Sports booth for Ocean Kayaks on both weekends.   Please stop by and say hi if we haven't met yet, and especially if we have!

I'll have a PPP slide show going, you might see your own face on the screen! (I'll lift pix from the NCKA big fish thread!)

It's a blast at the FH show, I bring my rigged yak and just talk about kayak fishing for a couple days in a row, sharing the stoke.  It's always great to have more yak anglers around, lots of people have lots of questions.  Some guys walk up and kind of laugh at a rigged kayak, but many of them walk away with an altered attitude when they see the pix of some of the fish we've caught.  A few people I've met at those shows are fishing from yaks themselves now.  V. Cool!

I won't be able to make it on Saturday morning, but I hope some of us get to the angler's caucus, with Coastsiders and DFG honchos to talk about the future of recreational fishing in California.  Also I'd recommend Steve Carson albacore seminars and of course my radio show partner Mike Baxter's seminar on marine electronics.

Oh, and BTW, I don't plan on buying anything at either show.....(yeah right)

I "retired" from REI but you can still pick my brain - I need to do a little shopping myself  :smt002

I'd like to give San Louis a try....never fished there before but I hear the fish are bigger - but harder to find - seems more challenging  :smt002
