For that to happen to me (A self proclaimed ocean newbi) I'd be sending my FJ's to the cleaners after, what I surely know would have taken place inside my shorts!  I'm thinking "Haymakers" with ugly club and just one good connect! :smt044

A furbag pulls that junk on me, I'm gaffing him and deal with the consequences later (if they catch me). Some dumbass sealhugger probably fed that GWS chow from their kayak, and trained it to do "tricks". We need to start clubbing "them".

Maybe it is time to let the native Americans start harvesting furbags again.

Glad you're ok.

Hmm this list says "chemical irritants (e.g., non-toxic pepper spray, mace) used for animal control (there are many municipal and state ordinances controlling the use and possession of these irritants)" are OK.  I'll move the bear spray from the backpacking box to the kayak box.  Has anyone had issues inside the bay or is it all off shore?
just dont spray into the wind!

Out of Albion, a little south of Salmon Creek, a very cute big-eyed seal stole a nice ling from me last year and busted my pole in the process.  These guys are not only cute, they are tough and badass strong and they swim better than Esther Williams or Johnny Weismuller (or do I date myself too much here?)

Comments are right that they have learned to follow boats (including kayaks), stealing bait and catch and discards.  They are smart and the ones I have encountered have split and dove down when you first draw your slingshot--like they know what is coming.  (I think the party boat deckhands have trained them in marble avoidance!)

I have also read accounts of seals "playfully" holding divers down (I think they may be territorial in their hunting areas?) and I suspect that some unexplained diving deaths may be the result of these playful seal encounters.

The lions are obviously potential bad news, but I think the seals (which seem to be so much more at ease with close human contact) are way more dangerous.  I suggest picking up that slingshot as soon as you spot one, and please o please do not flip your leftover bait to these cute round-eye ocean babies.  You will be training them to climb into your lap...

Glad to hear you are alright and you had your wits about you; that could have gotten ugly in a hurry, especially if you were separated from your paddle..
I have a two and a half foot gaff/club for a reason, ever see the original movie Walking Tall...........I'll put the big stick to work if the need should arise. Worst case scenario, I carry a knife on my pfd for a reason, shit happens.

A couple of years ago Papa Bill and I were guiding a few newbies for scallen (Monterey) when the identical thing happened to Bill. Seal acting very erratic trying to get out of the water then just like that the seal jumps right on Bill's lap and gives him a lap dance.
The landlord may have been trying to collect rent!
I was also fishing with  Dan the day the Landlord chomped on his Hobie while drifting the Bean. So when I see a seal acting like that I take it as an alarm that their maybe a bigger issue then the seal trying to get my bait. Just a thought.....

I was thinking the same thing........If a seal was tearing around and trying to get out of the water like that I would be heading home......

In 2006, a couple swimmers got bit by a rabid seal/lion in Aquatic Park.  Last summer I had one roll up on me and my lady while I was swimming and she was paddling inside Aquatic Park.  Thing was mad trippin'.  With all the other lean tri-meat in the h20, it figured i was too high a caloric snack lol

i feel ya pain sledge

Wow...I didn't think a furbag would have the cojones to do something like this.  Glad to hear you got out of it OK.  You'd think that if the furbag was threatening your life, you'd be in the green to club the hell out of it, right?  Damn filthy creatures.
