Thanks for the report and heads up on the furbags. They do eyeball, and harass you.
I pack my WristRocket and marbles for such encounters.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Damn!  I am sure the the harassment sucked but I was thinking the whole time I was reading that, that eventually would've said you noticed a dark shape patrolling in the area.  Good to know he was after freebies and not trying to escape from something bigger considering you ended up in the drink!

It does seem like there's more and more instances of this happening.  Maybe they're becoming accustomed to seeing kayaks w/ stringers and thinking of an easy meal.  I like the slingshot idea.

Yeah, man what a story!   :smt005  Glad you came out of it OK!  Don't know what I would have done while in the water with that furbag circling near by!  :smt009  Wonder if an air horn would deter them?

Dude that sounds like some scary stuff.  GF and I were paddling around Redwood cityt he other day and we saw one.  FYI  there is a nest/pack of them in the Redwood City slough if you are ever back there.

Dude... that's some serious stuff. I'll help calm you down over a bottle of hot sake when you come down for the ARW thing.

The seal population is up 10 fold in the last 30 years.  They are over populating and that leads to more competition for food.

Unfortunately with the marine mammal protection act we aren't allowed to shoot them.  You can do anything to discourage them as long as you do not intend to 'injure' them.  :smt012

i was bit by a seal at SWS 2 years ago and the bite went through my 7mm top and left deep scratches on my ribcage.

then i got bit all i felt was a strong pinch and a side to side shaking motion.

"when animals attack...."

this seal had been stalking me from below for about 30 minutes or so and it got me when i was at the bottom with my hand on a rock looking in a cave for a fish to spear.

i packed up the family and went to lover's beach where the seals were much more friendly.
