It seems the seals are getting way too friendly with kayakers. Is it leagal to shot
them with sling shot? I know I would if I had it with me. Like the saying goes shot now ask questions later. :smt002

i think in the monterey and carmel area people would call it harassment the moment they see you defend yourself against the seal. better to just scream like a little girl and swim away as fast as you could like i did. that seemed to get the seal off of me!

It seems we may have to go on the water with a side arm. A sling shot that is. :smt005 :smt005

Here's the NOAA link to what's allowable in terms of deterrents....

http://www.nwr.noaa.gov/Marine-Mammals/Seals-and-Sea-Lions/Deterring-Pinnipeds.cfm
Hummm... are paddles considered part of this list: "No Aggressive Tactile Methods (e.g., striking animals with bats, hammers etc., impact with vehicles or boats )"

Looks like a 'cattle prod' is the way to go!

Hmm this list says "chemical irritants (e.g., non-toxic pepper spray, mace) used for animal control (there are many municipal and state ordinances controlling the use and possession of these irritants)" are OK.  I'll move the bear spray from the backpacking box to the kayak box.  Has anyone had issues inside the bay or is it all off shore?
