That's what I call a close one. Glad he came home safe.

FLARES. Get some today & keep 'em in your PFD. You never know when you might need them.

EWB,

I picked up some from West Marine last weekend...pack of 4 for like $25...they are the ones that you pull the top off and use that to activate the flare...no clue if these suck or not...hope not!!   :smt012

They also had a cool little strobe light doo-hickey on sale (the thing is bright!!) and I picked up an air-horn and a whistle...

Have all except the whistle in a dry-sack, but thinking I should put a flare and the strobe in my PFD...

Didn't sound like this guy had a VHF or GPS or nothing...good lessons to be learned here...

Sincerely,

Jim

I sure hope they don't suck! Those are the same standard handheld flares I use. They do expire after a while so its a good idea to check the dates at the start of each season. which reminds me I should check mine..... :smt002
A tip I got awhile back is "if you have to shoot one off, try to cover the hand that is holding it with a glove or rag so sparks don't burn you & make you drop the flare".

Thanks for the tip!! Dropping the flare would DEFINITELY suck!!   :smt002

Newby question - do you really need a VHF if all of your paddling is inside the golden gate - or will a cell phone in a waterproof package suffice as I've not been anywhere in the bay where I could not get service?  Is it just a direct line to the coast guard vs. calling 911?

Thanks

In my experience, the VHF is for areas not open to reliable cell phone reception. Since some of my fav areas are in this catagory I never bothered getting a cell phone. Heck, i can;t get service at my house!

Years back in my Alaska days VHF was the go-to form of communication on the PW Sound.
The VHF also allows for convenient on-water conversations with your fishing buddies.

If you are sitting at anchor and a PB is bearing down on you. You can't call him on your phone but you might be able to hail him on Channel 16.

The Bay scares me more than the ocean,I'm a lot more at ease with a good waterproof VHF that you radio check before leaving the harbor.
I carry one of these in the pocket behind my seat.

Plus radios are fun I've heard more funny crap and never laughed so hard

Ben fired some of those at L Sonoma F&C last year and nobody would ever see them.

I too hope it wasn't one of ours. I don't want him as my fishin buddy. It was raining in the Bay Area after noon / lunch. It had to be really crappy out there. Wind, big waves, and late day start. obviously no compass or radio. Wanna make a bet he didn't have a wetsuit. Leaky kayak, maybe, but that doesn't  necessarily make you keep tipping over. Big waves and lots of chop do. He couldn't see land. If anyone is hard core enough to go out in conditions like those. The tiniest bit of common sense would say hug the coast.   :smt013

uhh...yea it does.
Pull the hatches off your kayak, fill it with water, seal the hatches and try to paddle. If your kayak has enough water in it it's like a log in a log rolling contest. It does exactly what it wants, not what you want.
