A good case for hull flotation too.  Hope it wasn't the "thru-hull FF hole driller."

I wonder how he kept his phone dry. My iphone touched water for a second and fried within a minute.

How come 911 couldn't locate him through the phone's gps?  I thought all current phones have this ability.

Talked to a CG guy at the harbor today.  He's from the Monterey base, and was in on this rescue.

the guy was 3 miles off shore, couldn't give his position accuarately.  Said he was 1/4 mile off the Aquarium, but he was way past the bell buoy. .  He was not dressed for immersion and was very hypothermic, went off in an ambulance.

They finally found him when he used that app on his iPhone for coordinates, but apparently that process was a struggle as well?  Maybe due to hypothermia?

Bottom line, it was not an easy rescue, it took a long time.  CG guy says they are like #8 on the list when someone calls 911.  He reccommended that I pre-program the local CG station #'s into my phone, to contact them directly.  I pointed to the vhf/gps on my zipped and snapped pfd, over the 3/2 wetsuit.

"oh, you're all set."

Apparently the SOT developed a crack, hairline and just took too much water on.  It stayed barely afloat and the angler stayed with the boat, so both were rescued.

This kind of sh*t can make us all look bad . . . and this guy was unprepared on so many levels.

He's lucky that iphone didn't get dunked, and he obviously didn't have enough sense to use that gps app at first, possibly due to the hypothermia.

Newby question - do you really need a VHF if all of your paddling is inside the golden gate - or will a cell phone in a waterproof package suffice as I've not been anywhere in the bay where I could not get service?  Is it just a direct line to the coast guard vs. calling 911?

Unless your phone is fully waterproof, don't trust it on the water. Plus, what if you drop it when you get it out of the dry bag - is it leashed?  Ask how many guys have dropped & lost their VHFs in the depths. Even a VHF should be leashed to your pfd or use a good floating model.

When? He didn't notice 'til he was past the buoy . . . not dressed for immersion . . . w/out a VHF . . . without any other signaling or safety devices . . . etc, etc, etc?

Yep, I'm annoyed.   :smt011
