Mom's in Monterey so I'm looking at SWS on Sunday morning. Launch there is easy anyway but the forecast is excellent.

Should be able to get beyond the kelp beds so It would be great to join up with someone who knows that area better. I've only fish there once.

I will be making the drive down but I will probably not make it until 8 or 9:00 AM as I can't leave here until at least 6:30 AM.  Unfortunately, this will only be my second time down.  However, I am going to try to learn a bit more about my GPS unit so I can program in the SMR lat/longs into it.  If I can get this to work then we will at least be able to avoid the no take zone.  Fortunately, it looks like most of the day will be reasonably nice.

I'm on the fence about SWS. Only because the weather is looking so nice that Coral St. PG might be a better bet - no gate fees and easier to get there

Will check weather on Saturday and post  my launch site by afternoon

i called pebble beach and this weekend looks open unless there is a corporate event. Sunday is a mother's day thing but not a major function.

looks like SWS is a go for myself.

Mcag, I think he's talking about the Carmel Pinnacles SMR: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa/ccmpas_list.asp#pinnacles
Best thing to do it mark the boundaries w/waypoints. I use the skull&crossbones icon for these lol.

hey Pat,

my GPS broke.. about how far off the shore is the Carmel Pinnacles SMR?

all the kelp around the point is fair game correct? is the SMR the big pile of secondary kelp a little further out?

Porky,

I got a little Garmin GPS that I won't need this weekend...I've never tried to input waypoints manually (I've just marked them when I'm out there) but you are welcome to borrow it and use it if you want.

Jut let me know.

Sincerely,

Jim

The only part that comes kinda close to shore is the SW corner of the SMR. But it's more noticeable in the summer when the kelpbed is super thick and stretches out towards that corner of the SMR [so if you paddle around the point on the outside of the kelp, you may get close]. It isn't as much of an issue right now because there isn't much kelp.
But generally, the SMR is offshore far enough to stay out of it. You'd have to paddle out into open water for a ways before you reach the Pinnacles (usually can see them breaking w/6+ft swell). You'll see commercial diveboats posted-up on the Pinnacles too. All the lings are shallow right now so you s/b targeting nearshore structure like 30-60ft.
