BP ought to thank its lucky stars that its a huge oil company and Packard co-hort..
Otherwise the Packard Foundation would be all over them for causing a million times more real damage then their working class foes.

Attempted and pending environmental genocide has got to be at least a misdemeanor in their selective playbook of eco-terrorists as are fishers, divers, kayakers and the like.

They are not in this fight for the Gulf of Mexico of course but they were in the fight to whitewash and certify BPs policies as benign and responsible. Selling safe credentials and green /whitewash papers  for BP however is a matter of record.
That alone speaks for itself about the limits of their sincerity about the marine environment..

Imagine if the Packard Foundation put their money to good works instead of thinly vieled corporate interests.

Scott,
Wood Turtles , an amazing species, used to be common in CT when I lived there-extremely rare only in some parts on N.England, Eastern Indigo snake, pretty much extinct in the wild, just off the top of my head, im not going to do any reaserch for you here, Chinese River dolphin, extinct, Siberian Tigers, Snow Leopards in the 100s and going fast, Rhinos, tigers and Bears...all kinds of Asian turtles are going extinct to the food buis. Tropical fish, or how about the Plankton in the CA delta? Going extinct. Ask Jim/inseine
A century ago was worse, the state paid out 100s of thousands of dollars for Indian scalps alone, you think anyone cared about frogs back then? No one cared about the Passenger Pigeons that went extinct. Ill bet there were less extinctions 500 years ago, not 100.
P.William Sound is toxic, dig down a foot anywhere on shore and you will hit oil, the gulf spill is one exxon valdeze every 5 days and it just started hitting ground now, hasnt hit any reefs yet, and all the oil thats underwater, hey I hope your right and it will turn into something soft and fluffy but to me its another disaster.
I still enjoy people and have trust and faith in most individuals, anyone who knows me knows this, but as a planet full of different cultures, me thinx the planets getting the shaft.

By conservative estimates.  Truth is noone really knows, from what I gather.

True that.

It will be interesting to see if the "top kill" (or as I like to say, "oilpon") works.

Yep. I'm saying that in 5-10 years, nobody's going to pay much attention to results of this spill. And I don't stand to make a single penny off of the oil companies.  PWS and Ixtoc I are my reasons for stating this. Do you have any facts to back up your claims?

Scott

i cant beleive someone with a brain would let something so stupid out of their fingers. :smt012

Some very scary pics by a local photographer...

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=174850&id=161186488701

"Made 2 trips down to Grand Isle last week, the first was on Tuesday 5/25/10. Spent some time initially on the West End of the island by Caminada Pass......things looked pretty clean at first, Anderson Cooper of CNN was arriving that day so this is no surprise, we started to find oil in very strange places, one being on the dry side of the jetties, which appeared to have been moved out a bit. I am very familiar with the area having spent a considerable amount of time shrimping and fishing on Elmers Island and Grand Isle, we have a family home down there....I was accompanied by friend and fellow photographer Andy Levin on my trips, when I suggested we stop looking on the sand and go back towards the marsh grass, he seemed a bit puzzled, but knowing the mindset of the locals, and trusting my gut, I felt that if there were shortcuts to be taken, that would be the place to look. Immediately upon entering the brush, the STRONG stench of death overcame me, and this is where we found at least 13 Bull Redfish, whole bodies, some covered in oil, discarded and rotting. No one would ever throw away such a catch and it was obvios to me what the cause of death was........additionally, we found the exposed freshly rotting head of what appeared to be a dolphin, at the top of an unnatural sand mound about 20 yards away. On my return trip, I attempted to dig, but the smell was overwhelming, all kings of bones were surfacing and it was obvious to me what was under there. To me that would explain many strange occurrences at the west and east end of the island, namely solid oil being exposed under some places where one would walk, under the sand.......so how does oil get under the sand.......behind the jetties, the scary thing is that these are hearty fish. Redfish this size would take 20 to 30 minutes to reel in for a fisherman, yet they apparently succumb to oil rather easily, as dolphins apparently do to. Why hasn't anyone heard about this, and why is BP burying such things without any reporting, warning, things are not as they appear through the media, and I am afraid that it will get a whole lot worse sooner than later.....And btw, on my return trip 5/28 the Dolphin head was nowhere to be found.......Headed out of Venice tomorrow..."

So messed up...

Sincerely,

Jim

I dvr'd a program on the oil spill on NatGeo, intending to get boned up on it.  It made me so sick I couldn't finish it.  If the spill doesn't make your stomach turn and blood boil . . .

I was talking with one of my contract doc reviewers who is from Baton Rouge.  Her family and friends are just devastated, maybe not directly, but the impact is inescapable and has truly altered life down there forever.  And by forever I'm talking in the human time frame, not the geologic time frame.  A disaster of epic proportions...

It's so sad...

not only their way of life, but now their health too. the fumes from that oil are going to give health problems and birth defects for years to come, and that is just one of the many sad details that are SLOWLY coming out of this. Try this one...

"Fissures", meaning, the sea floor is cracking and leaking more oil in different places, like 20 miles from the original site...

There sure is a lot of general outrage directed at BP, but are they the real villains here? Yes, they have been less than truthful about the amount of oil which was spewing, which was probably on advice of their in-house legal counsel in anticipation of the legal heyday ensuing...but that's another rant topic.

With 5% of the world's population consuming 20% of the world's oil, don't the American people have a significant portion of blame to shoulder? BP is only the dealer supplying the junkie. And it's not as if there haven't been plenty of warnings. The spill is only one of the issues of our addiction. And it is probably one of the lesser ones to boot. Certainly more visible though.

Don't get me wrong, I feel absolutely sick seeing the carnage of the gulf too...

As your unofficial British correspondent I can report that this is not quite right.

I think what some people here are getting irritated about is the perception that Britain is somehow to blame because BP used to be called British Petroleum and because the public face of the disaster is English.

We have no love for BP either.
