don't the American people have a significant portion of blame to shoulder?

No.....plenty of oil is pumped every day without a global catastrphe ocurring.  Besides, we prosecute junkies and dealers for the crimes they commit not the society or conditions that created them.  If we screwed up its when we allowed them to drill after knowing they have a spotty safety record.

We do shoulder some of the blame-- we put the condition (government) in place that would allow the coziness of regulators, etc

Have to agree with obkook and SteveS too,  till we get off the barrel this is what we are going to get, and more.

I would like to think this will be a watershed event and things will change, but as history as our teacher, things will stay the same as we head to the cliff and jump like lemmings...

I read that Kevin Costner threw his hat in the ring with the centrifuges his brother developed (with $20mil of Kevin's money).
suck in the contaminated water, spin it to separate the oil, then pump out the cleaned seawater.
Only 200 gallons a minute, but I saw they have deployed 32 of them.

I say throw everything we've got at this, so good on ya Costner. I sure hope the equipment works as advertised.

When BP CEO Tony Hayward testified before Congress this morning, many expected to hear him apologize for the disaster his company has caused. Instead, GOP Congressman Joe Barton was the one saying he was sorry -- to BP.

In his opening statement, Barton, the top Republican on the committee overseeing the oil spill and its aftermath, delivered a personal apology to the oil giant. He said the $20 billion fund that President Obama directed BP to establish to provide relief to the victims of the oil disaster was a "tragedy in the first proportion."

Other Republicans are echoing his call. Sen. John Cornyn said he "shares" Barton's concern. Rep. Michele Bachmann said that BP shouldn't agree to be "fleeced." Rush Limbaugh called it a "bailout." The Republican Study Committee, with its 114 members in the House, called it a "shakedown."

 The Gulf Coast way of life has been destroyed, people's health threatened for years to come, and wildlife and ecosystems decimated,

20 Billion won't even scratch this, and won't even put a dent in their portfolio,

Yeah, that apology was amazing...

But not many Republicans actually sided with him. In fact, according to this article, he was forced to retract the apology or lose "a ranking committee position".

According to a GOP leadership aide, Barton met with House Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio) and Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) Thursday afternoon, and was told, "Apologize, immediately. Or you will lose your [subcommittee] position, immediately. Now that he has apologized, we'll see what happens going forward."

Another aide said Barton would now not be removed unless he goes on "the TV circuit" and causes further controversy. The aides requested anonymity to discuss the private discussions of the Republican leaders.

In his statement, Barton said, "I apologize for using the term 'shakedown' with regard to yesterday's actions at the White House in my opening statement this morning, and I retract my apology to BP...I regret the impact that my statement this morning implied that BP should not pay for the consequences of their decisions and actions in this incident."
