Yakuza (Martin) and I made a run for Salmon out of Moss on Sunday. I get a text Sat night saying....WX look sweet see ya 5ish. Right on time we load up my boat and were off. We are almost there and Yakuza says 'ummm I don't have a license' WTF its April how can that be? Martin says thats OK and he'll just paddle for fun and a work out. HELL NO! We hit up the mom and pop store and we score the goods. We make it to the launch and see the lot is full of trailers and the iron ranger is literally over flowing UH OH! Get ready for the kook show OTW. We saddle up and launch. We pedal out and and start the troll. Within 5 min we are in 100+ FOW. I am trolling a watermelon apex on a double deep six. Yakuza is running a chovie pop on a sinker release. We roll and roll all the way to 300+ FOW....NO LOVE. No PB's in the area but the radio is alive with fish at 275-300 FOW. Yikes! We 'aint gonna reach that w/o downriggers. We switch over to mooching. Right about that time Yakuza get buzzed by a whale. It looked like a pilot whale but no clue if they are in the area. Apparently, Yakuza smells and looks like a whale cuz this thing stays with us for 30 min. We move out a bit and I drop, drop, drop....I literally spool my revo toro to reach bottom. I got 200 YARDS of line on this sucker....So I jig my way up as I get to the surface I see 10 -15 squid attacking my chovie! We move on and try some more.....no love again. We then decide to move in shallower and shoot for hali's I am bouncing bottom and I pull up to check my bait and I got a stinger hook full of squid egg sacks! Well I guess I know where the squid are. Long story short no fish but we peddled 9+ miles and had some beautiful WX. I am sure Yakuza will chime in with some more details and pics

No pics of the whale?

Nice try. Must've been nice to be out on the ocean!

The key word here is "peddled" 9 miles lol. Cheater, no salmon for you!

I'm glad to see someone gave it a try.  I was going to go out one day last week, but there was such an all morning ebb at the jaws and wind coming later that I didn't launch.   Then I started to really read the Bayside Marine and Coastside reports - they are all out about 6+ miles and right on the bottom at 250-350 fow, too far and too deep except for a really light-wind day.  A couple PB's have mooched a few. Mostly full of krill, but some small herring too.
Now that it looks like we'll have some summer months to try for them, I'm not as interested in paddling that far out.  The long paddle isn't the problem, being that far out with no place to emergency exit is.
You should try launching behind the breakwaters inside the jaws opposite the ramps to avoid the chaos. Wheels make it easy.

To be honest, I think I would have switched to jigging for squid. I know, but I just can't help myself, I love that stuff  :smt003 .

Thanks for the report!

Woke up in the morning feeling like P.Diddy.  But, my only action all day was getting buzzed by that large marine mammal.  It must have breached 10 to a dozen times w/in feet.  Tried to bone outta there right quick, but he tailed me!  Eventually it gave up interest.  Thought my number was up.  By the old stinkeye it was giving me, these wasn't no curiosity peeks.

Eric was dressed for snowmaggedon, with sweats over longjohns all covered by his new drysuit.   :cold  I was like, hope you brought Gatorade cuz yous bout to get yo sweat on.  Sure enough about 2 miles out, we was perspiring like two ho's attending church.  Peeled off my sweatshirt, eric ditches some upper layers and we go back to trolling, mooching, and trooching.

Nice day for paddling.  A set screw for one of the turbo fins slipped loose, letting the fin flap like dumbo's ears.  Good workout paddling, but it made trolling a 1 lb ball at 140 pulls a chore.  Chatter on 69 stated fish were all out of our range and deep, like 275 on the wire! Too rich for my blood.  We were waaaaay inside the fleet.

Q:  'Sup w the 2 fine-as-hell creel census chicks working the south ramp at Moss?  Something about a hot chick wearing drab olive and holding a hog trough . . . hubba hubba.  DFG's consolation prize for low salmon numbers, I guess.  Pull up to the launch, and the brunette asks, "What were you guys doing?  omg, FISHING???  Is that a water gun?" (referring to my bilge pump)  Like we had just paddled 4 miles off shore to play frickin' tiddlywinx or something!  The blond asked no such dumb questions.  Was about to show them a monkey faced eel, but they were only interested in salmon.

Itching to bloody the deck on the next go round.

as far as bait.. there looked to be some. but i had a new FF so I am not sure how accurate it is. Both our FF's took a dump (batteries) I am switching over to my brick (vs AA's).

We tried to get the whale but Martin was to freaked out and ran...It was just surfacing for breath. So by the time you spin around and aim it back under water.

Yeah. I considered going for squid but I got a freezer packed so I need to soak some crab pots to make room.

yeah, yeah peddled. No way I would have done 9 mi with my T13. Oh and trolling with a paddle doesn't sound fun. It was a PITA with both hands free!
