Skyboy - going through the surf is all about timing. Just pull your kayak in knee deep water and get on it and just sit there and keep you bow pointed towards the incoming breakers. Once you see the last wave of the set break, PADDLE like there's no tomorrow and DO NOT hesitate.

IMO:Coming in is the tricky part. Most of our kayaks were not made to surf with. So, on the big surf days, I come in stearn first (I've learned this from the locals) I've flipped about 4-5 times coming in this way (out of 60+ landings) but I still think it's the better way - for Linda Mar at least .(not all beach breaks are the same) Just make sure you store and secure all your stuff before launching and landing.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE and PRACTICE. (without your gear on board)

I might be there this Saturday (LM) - depending on conditions (fishing reports and weather).

Joel, Thanks for the tips, I am a little nervous about the surf thing, but never afraid of water, should be fun. I will try to look for you on Saturday. I am pretty easy to spot around town, I drive a blue '72 scout II, with the top off. Joe

Hey Joe - I plan on fishing HMB tomorrow for rockfish (around 6PM). I'll be launching at Surfers Beach (along HWY1 - next to the motor homes) - you are more than welcome to join me. If it's too rough out there, I'll paddle inside the harbor and try for halibut.

Nice ride by the way  :smt023 I like the old school scout!

I would love to join you, but, unfortunately I have 3 rush loans I have to get finished prior to the weekend if I plan on any playing at all over the weekend. I guess you could say, as one of the other post referred too, "I have a lawn to mow!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I will be ready next week for anything you can send my way. Joe

No worries Joe - you'll have no problems hooking up with this crew. There's always someone making trips out on the weekends.

Welcome to the group guys!
My advice for starting out fishing on the kayak is keep things simple to start with. The more you paddle the more you'll find out what tackle, techniques, and style work for you. I used a single 20lb test rod/reel with a leash, a game bag, and a 6 lure tackle box and that was it when I started.
I still have a pretty rudimentary setup but I have added a crate with PVC tubes for 2 rods, a billy and a gaff and a game clip, plus I now bring a deck compass & VHF along with a water bottle & first aid kit. I also have a small dry bag I store my reels in.
If there is anything you can't afford to lose over the side it must have a tether or leash on it  because the ocean is always hungry for gear.
enjoy!

Skyboy,

You can never have enough gear!  I cannot count the times that I've worked an area hard with the rubber only to grab my second rod with the iron and proceeded to catch some nice fish (or visa versa).  I STRONGLY believe that if I would have taken the time to re-tie my 1 rod with something else, all the fish would have swam away during that time.   :smt002   Hmmm ... works for me ... in my mind I'm completely justified having more gear.

any advise on getting her to knock off early during the week so I can go fishing. My 2 yr old son work with me all day from home. It might help if I tell you she is Italian and Puerto Rican, if I piss her off she just goes to the gun cabinet. NOT AGOOD IDEA>>>>>>I am joking she is pretty reasonable considering the unending list of hobby's I have.
