I am looking to buy a lumber rack for a Dodge Ram shortbed. Please let me know if you have one for sale or if you see one for sale in the south bay/santa cruz/monterey area. Thanks guys!

Hey Pat,

I'd get these instead: http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/product_Yakima-Outdoorsman-300-Compact-Rack_10000320____?cm_mmc=PPC-_-GoogleProductAds-_-na-_-Yakima-Outdoorsman-300-Compact-Rack&ad_id=GoogleProductAds

I had a Lumber Rack at one point and if I had to do it again, I'd go with Yakima rack that I posted above (which I'm currently using right now). It does not catch the wind as much at the Lumber Rack. Just my 2 cents...

Sin, the only thing I can advise is if you go with a rack, go sturdy I skimped and payed for it in the long run. Even if your not carring heavy, the rack will eventually weaken or crack over time if you put allot of miles on the rig.

That's a cool rack Mooch. And it's in my price range (under $200). I like that it matches w/yakima products and probably has less drag on the freeway. But I'm concerned about it's sturdy-ness. I plan to abuse the crap outta the rack. And I also think a regular lumber rack m/b better in terms of weight too--I kinda want something heavy to keep the rear wheels from spinning, when cruising yakless. Anybody have an opinion about these Yakima Outdoorsman racks? Sturdy enough to load two 70lb yaks?

FYI, the yakima outdoorsman are sold in half sets.  If you want 4 towers for the truck bed, you need to order two of the 1/2 sets, and also order the crossbars.

$179.10 x 2 (towers)
$31.50 x 2 (crossbars)

$421.20 - total cost

Its not what I would call ultra tough, BUT I just remembered I have a Mirage truck rack in my basement from before I went to the camper shell/yakima bar route. I had it on a standard bed ranger.

It's a breakdown type of rack that stashes behind the pickup seat. The base is aluminum rails that are fixed to the truck bedrails & have a channel that the uprights slide into. I got it because I still needed an open bed but didn't want a heavy steel rack. I carried two yaks on it for a few years on free way trips to SoCal & it worked fine. The crossbars are round & accept all yakima accessories.

I doubt it fits your needs Pat, but I'd let it go for $100.00 if any NCKA'er needs a quick rack. I'll post it up in the classifieds here pretty soon.

Right on Sean, that's a nice offer. Thank you! I will have to pass though because I don't want to deal with the channeled-rails attachment.

And thanks for clarifying the Yakima outdoorsman components, Shicken. As I read about it, I started to get the feeling that $180 = just one tower...and the crossbars are sold separately. D'OH! Yakima seems to be good at that: making the consumer pay for additional pieces of ancillary equipment.

I kinda blew a deal I found on CL. A local was selling a quality lumber rack for $120 but I couldn't pick it up until Thursday (spoke w/him on Monday). Well, he called yesterday to say it was sold. Guess that's what I get for lagging.
The search continues!

I have a TracRac.  They seem to be sturdy, see a few on contractors trucks.  But is expensive compared to the steel racks and there has to be a bunch of used one available.  Check with a truck wrecking yard, and see if they have one.  As to the pop-up trailer.  I have a slide in pop-up truck camper and have an old QuickandEasy rack from my 1975 Chevy van.  Clips to rain gutters.  And they sell short, bolt on gutters for just this purpose.  They would also fit a Yakima / Thule rack.  The gutters bolt to the side and I sealed well.  So no holes in the top part of the roof.

Hey guys,

I found this on Craigslist.  This one is not mine.  I loaned my set to Mooch, while my truck is being worked on.
