Hitched a ride on the back of my buddy's boat to fish Whites Slough today.  Looking for a pattern that might work next weekend during the Bass-n-Tubes tourney in the area.

Bumped into HobieBlue Bryan at the Honker Cut Marina.  Good to meet you, man.  How did you do?

We headed for areas within reasonable yak reach of where Guard Road ends at a gate and a bend in the slough (the location where the tourney will launch).  First fish in the boat came on a senko along a rock wall.  There was a little wind chop building on the water and we were working a shallow flat with buzzbaits and spooks, thinking we should be throwin paddle tail swimbaits.

That's when I hang my buzzbait in the berry bushes and have to break it off (apparently getting the fancy Champion bass boat close enough to grab my bait is not an option).  Oh well.  Tie on a spinnerbait.  Partners says, "Hey, Aaron, take the front of the boat, would ya?"

OK.  Got my foot on the trolling motor, figure I'll see if I can actually maintain boat control and pay attention to casting and retrieving my bait at the same time.  Second cast, let the bait flutter, lift the rod and feel a bunch of the hairy weeds I've come to know and hate this morning clinging to my....

Wait a miinuute... are those weeds pulling back?  A good yank and it gives...nahh, just weeds...that are SWIMMING toward...SET!!!  (Meanwhile, partner is trying to finish answering nature's call and fumbling for the net.)  When I saw her in the water I thought, this could be a new PB!   Which was enough of a thrill to make up for the sluggish fight that is common with many bass over 6 pounds.

She weighed in at 9 lbs 4 oz., photographed nicely and swam away like a champ!  In the end, my partner says to me,  "That makes it two phrases you'll never here me say again...
1. 'I'll back the trailer in and you just drive the boat on,'"  ( a reference to a mysterious ding that appeared on his tailgate a few years back) "
and 2. 'Take the front of the boat, would ya?"

Here she is:

Wish it was the new PB.  She cam up just a bit short of bumping the 9-9 from 2 years ago.  I just wanna bag her big sister next weekend in the tourney and maybe cash a check!

Funny thing about me and big bass...it's never big enough and I always want MORE!!!!!
