Some Pro & Con main points:

Pro:
- Thinner diameter for same pound test
- No stretch so more sensitive to bite
- Last longer

Con:
- Cost more
- Low abrasive resistance so easy to break if nicked

Braid has no stretch which means it's extra sensitive and it also has a smaller diameter over mono (great for fishing deep water) Most of us will fill our spools with braided line and then tie on (top shot) mono at the end. Mono is better on the end because it's got better abrasive qualities over braid.

For rockfish, everyone has their own preferred setup. I use 20 to 30 pound suffix braided line on the spool and then add on about 10 feet of 20# mono at the end.

The beauty of the top shot set up is that you can always switch you mono accordingly. For example, If I choose to mooch for salmon, I'll use the same set up but switch the mono to 12 to 15 pound test. (I'd also switch my rod accordingly - for rockfish, I'll use a Trevala and for salmon I use my clarus)

Braid with a mono topshot is the way to go. It's true that braid costs more but a good quality braid/spectra lasts 8-10 years.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

and if you are a total cheapster like me, you just reverse the spooling of the braid when it gets old....i hvae two reels with identical braid, when they start looking worked i just unspool on onto the other, and presto brand new braid

One thing to be careful of is not to go to high on the lb rating of the line. If you get hung up in the rocks in a big swell it could be trouble. Keep some cutters close at hand if you need a quick breakoff. A mono leader also helps in this situation for an easier breakoff.

+1. Love the braided lines of today. The mono topshot allows me ease of breaking in case of snags, and i also like that the mono allows me to run a finger over it after battling a fish & easily feel if it is abraded & needs to be re-tied.

When I switched over to 60lb braid with a short 30 mono leader, it was nice to feel my lure hitting the bottom or rocks.  It felt just so sensitive, I even started to feel most of the little nibbles and was able to set the hook (more in the lips than the throat) on most of the fish.  If I get snagged I just wrap several turns around my knocker and then just hang on (I keep it close to the side of the yak), the waves or swells will either break it loose or just break my leader.  No fear of tipping over this way.  When I break off I just replace the short leader and lure.

For RF fishing, I would go 30lb as the lightest!

Agreed, I like 40lb braid with a 25lb mono or flouro leader.

I've always been really lax with this stuff and just load my reel up with the same mono for everything. Since coming here i've been inspired to step it up...so with that said, I wanna try the braid/mono set up...

Stupid question, but what method and or knot are you using to attach the mono to the braid?
