Is a crab guage required for dungies? In the regs, no measuring device is specified, while for abalone, a guage and an iron are specificaly mentioned. Would a ruler be enough for crabs?
I'm heading out tomorrow so a quick response would be greatly appreciated...
 Thanks,
 Andrew

A crab gauge is just a good convenience.  It's hard to accurately measure them with a ruler or tape measure.

29.05(c) of the regs says you have to have a measuring device.

29.05(c) of the regs says you have to have a measuring device.

if you choose to use a measuring tape, you stand the risk of measuring the actual curvature length of the shell; not the length of the shell as shown in the picture below.

You crab must either exceed the minimum length of 5 1/4 or the gauge must "pop" when the crab fits inside the measuring device.

Additional, it is your responsibility to ensure the the measuring device you purchase and/or are using is accurate; so double check them after you purchase it to make sure.

If you buy one from the store, make sure to measure it--to confirm it's accurate! I remember a few yrs ago people got busted for keeping undersize dungies...because their Danielson brand gauge was short by 1/8 inch!
How about a piece of 1/4" pvc and 2 elbow joints?
