I'm planning a full weekend fishing/camping trip.  Gonna head out Saturday morning, fish Saturday, camp, fish Sunday, then go home.  I'm wondering, will fish caught on Saturday stay fresh in the icebox, assuming they are covered in ice?

What is the longest they can stay in icebox without spoiling?

What can I do to to help fish stay fresh?  Will gutting them on the spot help?

If you have them in ice, that's generally colder than your fridge.  So yes,  it'll be fine.

I like gutting fish before transport as a general rule because it keeps the cooler cleaner, burns less ice, lighter, reduced spoilage rate, & makes filleting a lot less messy as well.

Vacuum Seal and Dry Ice are best recommended during camping, I've learned the from the polygamist utahn, 2 days in ice will still work as long as they are definitely covered in ice, I did the same at ALBION

yep..like the others said. You also pack the (gut) cavity with ice.

Make sure dirt/guts/goo/slime are cleaned off the fish.  Don't allow fish to soak in the water.  You can easily get 2 days.

I used to work at a really nice fish restaurant and we always kept the fish in the fridge with ice on top of the filets.  They lasted about five days as long as they were really cold.

I agree with Darius. Alan and I get the best results with dry ice. Prepare fish as for the freezer. Vacuum seal or wrap as usual, then put on top of a towel on top of the dry ice in the cooler. Comes out uber fresh. Fish will last 7 days in the cooler in summer for $10. Ice will work, but dry ice is ideal.

The above tips are IMPORTANT.

I made the mistake of filleting a lingcod and got in a hurry and just bagged the fillets blood, slime and all, they were buried in ice but just one day later they smelled and tasted like crap.

I've found that burying the whole fish in ice without disturbing the gut to work best for me, I don't clean fish now until they are going to be eaten or frozen within a few hours. Ive had rockfish buried in ice for up to 3 days that smelled and tasted like they just came out of the water

Fish on ice stays surprisingly fresh.  2 days is no problem.

Clean and ice promptly.  Keep it out of the meltwater.

Wrapping in some newspaper can help keep it from slipping to the bottom of the melting ice.

I usually bleed and gut the fish + bury it with ice AND then pull the drain plug of the cooler out to let the rest of the nasty stuff to seep out.

...depends on the type of fish too; some "keep" better than others. But definitely don't let the fish sit in meltwater and don't leave the icechest in the sun.

Wrap the ice chest in your sleeping bag, last much longer that way.
