I've done a search and found some posts on point, but not exactly.

I currently wear a 3mm FJ, neoprene socks and booties.  When I launch, my feet get wet.  I don't mind cold weather, and shouldn't *itch, but would prefer to keep my feet dry.  I've seen posts where some have taped the booties where it meets the wetsuit so minimize wet feet, but I don't think that's a long term solution.

I definitely want to wear my wetsuit as a safety measure at all times (I saw all the posts regarding it).

So what are my options?  The only thing this little newbie can think of is to wear dry (or semi-dry) pants w/ socks  such as the Kokatat T3 Tempest Pants ($159) over my wetsuit.  That way, I have the best of both worlds?  If that is the case, do I need to buy special booties to wear over my dry pants?

thx in advance for the input- even if it's just telling me to stop *itching and fish...

Might get a little too hot and heavy. I suggest buying a cheap pair of rain pants (make sure they are seam sealed), cut 'em into knee high shorts and wear it over your farmer john wetsuit. This will keep your butt dry.

Can't help you with the cold feet thing - it's never really bothered me.

thx Mooch.  web butt don't bother me... but wet feet does. I'm sure my last sentence  will get a lot of comments.

I love my tempest pants. I wear thick wool socks, long johns, and sweat pants under the tempest. I am good to go even in this cold weather we have been
having and I stay nice and dry. You must wear  booties or sandals though to
protect the bottom part of the tempest pants.

tempest pants....get 'em and you'll never regret it. I can't recall who but someone does make a 'wading boot' that goes up to the shin.

Here's my 2 cents on the Tempest Dry Pants...

They are comfortable and a lot easier to put on compared to a farmer john BUT I'm still not convinced that it's the safest thing to wear if your yak fishing by yourself and miles away from shore. If you dump (fall off the kayak) water will still seep in through the waist if don't self rescue right away. And the little water the seeps in won't protect you from the 55 degree nor cal water. Even if you have your fleece pants on, it won't do any good if it's wet. Let's just say, if the worse happens...like your kayak takes on water and you need to swim back to shore, I'd rather be wearing my 3 mill FJ's.

just my 2 cents...

I still prefer wearing my FJ's if and when I'm way out there and by myself - which is a rare thing for me to do these days now that I've got my buddy list. Needless to say, I've been wearing the tempest dry pants more regularly  :smt002

I've been wearing my 3ml farmer john, some polypro shorts underneath, thick socks, then tempest pants, & 5 or 7 ml booties. For the torso I wear short sleeve nylon rashguard, longsleeve polypro heavy shirt, nylon jacket, 2ml neoprene gloves, and if it's overcast & cold a neoprene hood. This has kept me warm & I've only needed to ditch the nylon jacket once for an hour when it got a little too warm cause the sun made an appearance while I was pedaling fast.

The other option besides the tempest pants is waders but I dress for immersion and will not go on the bay or ocean without the farmer john and my neoprene booties. This isn't Socal & it sure aint Hawaii. jim

Jim, does your lower body get too warm at all to the point of being uncomfortable?  In January?  In August?  Let me know, thx.

thx everyone for the advice.  I'm leaning towards trying the waterproof socks first ($40).  If that doesn't satisfy, then I'm gonna buy me some Tempest pants ($140).  After that, I promise I won't *itch and just fish.  thx again.

My only concern would be tearing the pants in rough surf conditions. I've seen them get torn up from catching on a pad eye, etc. Once they get a hole in them they are done, & so are you if you are in the water w/o any neoprene underneath. Brrrr!

I really like mysterioso clothing as a base layer under anything. Mooch uses an Oniell thermal top which is pretty much the same thing as mysterioso fabric.

For both safety and comfortability reasons, I wear a 3ml FJ wetsuit w/basic paddling pants+top over it. For my feet, I wear those SealSkinz waterproof socks (Sonny posted a link from REI above) with hard-sole booties over them. I hardly ever get wet while staying comfortable and safe.
Safe + Warm + Comfortable + Dry = happy me.
