For me, 12' long is perfect for most kayaking activities here in North coast.  It's perfect size for lake, bay, and ocean fishing around here.  If I do a lot of long distance (>10 mile) trips then I'll get a longer/faster kayak.  About the shark thing, I don't think it'll make any difference if you paddling a 12' or 14' kayak  :smt003

I really like mine. I fish the ocean for stripers and salmon. It's a nice yak. You won't be disapppointed. it's stable, tracks fairly well and easy to paddle. I think you will be pleased. :smt001

Spent an entire day paddling a Tarpon 120 today at Lake Chabot. Here's my 2 cent's....

If you buy one, I recommend getting the non angler version. The flush mount rod holders are positioned further back than it really should be AND the angle of the istallation makes it hard for you to actually see the rod tip when your trolling. Also keep an eye on the drain plug (make sure it's on there tight) because it's almost on the water line (for a heavy guy like myself anyway).

Paddles pretty good for a 12 footer!!!

...just my 2 cents.

dude, you should have got the 140. the extra 2in of width and 2ft shorter make it slower and track less.

A longer boat can be better if you have a tendency toward seasickness. A friend gets sick in his Cobra, but he doesn't when he borrows my 15 foot boat.

Congrats on the new yak Adman. Paddling is all about personal preference & comfort. Plus, as you may well discover down the road, one yak is not enough!
Different kayaks perform better in different situations. The T120 is a great all-around boat.

Thank you!  :smt001

I pick it up tonight! As someone who has float tubed their whole fishing life moving onto another fishing platform such as the kayak gives me lots of excitement. No more limitations on where I can fish.  :smt003

Cant wait to get it wet!

Here are a couple pics of it as promised.

Going to keep it pretty naked. Add FF later. Never fished with one so I can wait.

Rod Holder/Storage bin is from my float tube but seams to fit nicely in the back. Might adjust it to make it bigger.

Congrat on your new yak.  Nice custom made crate!

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with it so far.

With a little time I should have a pretty nice crate built for it. The float tube one is nice for starters but leaves a lot of space unused.

Curious. The hatches that open into the kayak. I understand that is for dry storage but I am wondering how you retrieve smaller objects if they are free to roam around the inside. I was thinking of some sort of bungie or leash that holds onto stuff so I can retrieve them easier. ?? any ideas?

Thanks.
Adam

That is a solution that works for some stuff.
I pretty much use the rear hatch as my catch-all for surf landings. As long as what I put in there stays inside the hull I'm happy. Once I'm on the beach I just pick up the rear of the boat & jiggle it to get all the miscellaneous stuff to slide to the bow. The center hatch on my 140 has a bag in it to corral small items. It's a handy feature, but I often wish the center hatch was a rod pod :smt003

Adam, look inside the center hatch of your new kayak. The new Tarpons have some bungee-like attachments built-in!  :smt003 Sorry, couldn't resist.  I tied some twist-ties to those attachments and I simply twist-tie my waterproof/tupperware box to keep it from roaming around inside the hull. Inside that box, I keep my keys, phone, camera, etc.
Sean, the new Tarpons don't have that hatch behind the seat anymore, unfortunately. Good idea is to use the bag in that hatch and put a modified SunnyD bottle in the middle hatch...no more gear sliding around in the rear (yeah, it rhymes).
BTW I can easily stash my 7' one-piece Trevala rod through that center hatch no problem.

Ah geesh, really? I didnt know there were attachments on the inside. A little embarrassed but  :smt044

Now that I know those are there  :smt003 I think I have it figured out. I like the sunny-d idea.

If all else fails lift and jiggle!
