Sorry, should have posted this one at the beginning of summer.

http://www.4fishin.com/Metal%20lures.htm

I've bought online before, but these were of better quality when it comes to the finish.  I bought the 6 oz jig, which I'm almost certain is the 8 oz Jig "A87".

My preferred weight is 6 oz, which they are selling as a 5 oz jig "A67".

You can buy the 5 oz jig for $2.29 with hooks, not yet attatched.  All you need to do is crimp the eye with pliers or tap it with a hammer.

Scroll to the very bottom of the above link.

IMO, iron is more cost effective than plastic swimbaits (unless your molding your own bodies and heads).

For this price, you can't go wrong.  No tax, but you have to pay shipping, so you may want to load up or split an order with your buddy.

Yep!  I bought from there earlier this year.  I am very pleased.
4oz - too light
6 oz -a little too heavy

5oz just right! :smt003

I came to the same conclusions.

Thanks Stuart I was going make my own but for that price I'll buy. Are you using their hooks to tie on  bucktail? If so what size hooks.

Mike,
I ordered the 7/0, but I don’t care for their hooks.  They have a really long shank, and they aren’t quite as strong as I prefer.  Another relatively cheap alternative is the Mustad Siwash 7/0 hook.(nickel?).  It looks like it could be S/S, but I think its actually NI.

I haven’t had the time to either tie on a bucktail/mylar, but I’m sure that wouldn’t hurt.  Maybe even a rubber grub, though the hooks don’t have the baitholder barbs.

A drop of super glue will solve that problem.

I'm just bumping this to the top.  Ling season is getting under way and these seem well priced.

I've found irons tend to snag more than plastics (though I use trebbles), and they also tend to catch fewer fish.  I only use them when I'm fishing a very productive area like big sur or sonoma county.  They also tire your arm out fast and require a heavier rod, which makes for a less exciting fight.

I've found that if they're lighter than 5 or 6 oz they tend to snag and don't come free, but the heavier ones will jackhammer themselves free if you yank on them a bunch of times.

Nothing beats a squid on a 7/0 leadhead for cost.  I was just in 99 ranch fri and they had baby octopus packs for $1.20.  There were 8-10 of them in there, bite sized for a large rockfish or legal lingcod.  I got one but never used them in big sur, last time I ran out of squid the bite was so furious so I brought the octopus as a more durable backup.  They went overboard when I went surfing inadvertantly.

I bought the 5 oz $2.29 ones and with shipping for 2 packs of 5 each (4 1/2 lbs, UPS rounds it up to 5) they came to $3.02 apiece, got them in less than a week regular ground delivery.

Ebay has listings for the Bridgeport Diamond Jigs in various sizes.  While not as cheap as Stu's link, also a fair deal.  This brand tends to be better quality.

$39/dozen for 6oz

I just never have any luck with those things. I've tried them for an hour or so and never got anything worth while. I always end up changing to some squid or anchovies on a hook.

Stuart,

It was nice to meet you at the fish derby.  I appreciate the fishing tips you gave me.  I am going to order some of these diamond jigs but I just want to confirm the size. You said that you prefer the 6 oz. size but they sell it as a 5 oz is that correct?  Just wasn't sure why there was the discrepancy in the actual versus stated weight.

The site gives the following: ML-A67     Diamond Jig with a Single Hook     5 oz     $3.39

Just wanted to check before ordering a dozen or more.

Thanks,

Doug

Doug,

I believe that Stuart is refering to the deal at the very bottom of the page where you only have to pay $2.29 each for the 5 oz jigs (sold in lots of 5) with unattached hooks  ML-A67SP.  You'll save a few bucks by crimping down your own hooks with a pair of pliers.

Does anyone know what "irons" are made of?
